Default Money clips... what kinds are best? Any brick & mortar stores sell them?

I just recently read about money clips and would like to get one. Researching online there's a million options of course... there are metal, metal wrapped in leather, composite, spring kinds, etc.

Are there styles that should be universally avoided? Certain kinds that get loose quickly or whatnot?

Also, are there any brick & mortar stores I could walk in, check them out, and buy one? I don't recall seeing them in stores, but I also have never looked for one! So there could feasibly be a whole section of them in every department store, I just don't know.

As I slowly develop into a gentleman worthy of the B&B forums, I am gradually making upgrades everywhere. And I am thinking it's probably a good time to do away with the George Costanza wallet!

Thanks in advance for the help!

I've never had a money clip that didn't get loose. Usually you can mash them back tight with some pliers. My favorite are silver ones. Most jewelry stores have them.

FWIW, I don't bother with a money clip, as there are always a couple of cards you need to carry. I've gone with the thin kangaroo leather front pocket wallet, which you can fold some bills into, and then the outside cards hold them in place.

I've reduced my EDC cards to drivers licence, public transport card, and one credit/debit card. Everything else I will pack as required.

I've been told to go with a spring type of money clip (which I have). The cost will vary on material and brand. You can check just about any place that has wallets, but the fancier stuff will be in the stores that sell accessories. Just keep in mind what you carry in your pockets with the particular materials of construction, I purchased a sterling silver money clip and carried it in the same pocket as my keys, there were some deep scratches.

I definitely am interested in the classic, simple silver clip. Something that I could use when casual or dressed up. Anyone use a carbon-fiber money clip? I have read that they hold their original form better than metal ones... but usually it's the manufacturer that is talking about that...

Also, good to know about the scratches and whatnot, I hadn't considered the battle damage. I carry my wallet in the front left pocket and the right pocket has the keys, change & cell phone. Probably not the friendliest environment for a silver money clip....

My dad always used a money clip in addition to a wallet. I think I tried using one but never found a good wallet with a money clip.

I carry a cheap one I picked up about 10 years ago at a Flea market for $2. Its a small black leather with two card slots and a magnetic clip.

Check out Gear patrol for the titanium money clip they reviewed if you like the simpler plain clip style.

I used to always carry the magnetic kind. I miss using those, they were so easy. But they aren't good with cell phones so I had to give it up.

I have an "Exentri card holder" (Which I never use) - Its not that it isn't nice, but I found it to be a big hassle using it on a daily basis, so I went back to my old wallet.

You can buy it from their website.

I've been using a Duck Bill money clip a couple years now. No problems, never loses it's spring and holds the 5-10 cards and various cash/paper I need perfectly. It holds everything and it's quick and easy to use it. Don't know if any stores carry them but can order from their website.

I've been using one of these double sided money clips, made from brass, for the past 9 months and am quite happy with it. Money on one side and my drivers license and check card in the other.

Wow, cool to see a lot of different options. Very cool that the Duck Bill money clip holds it's form for years... that goes a long way in my book. Like most things I want to figure out what to look for and get one that's the best I can get for the money. I worried that they all would lose their form and be loose if you stuff it once. Being a single fold wallet guy my whole life, this is a big step. My wallets always start off nice enough, then get over stuffed with crap, then get cleaned out, then start falling apart, then get overstuffed again. I think the clip will prevent this cycle from taking place, which will be nice.

I used the money clamp http://www.moneyclamp.com/?SID=95fec...aa29876bd213bd I bought one of their cheeper offerings with the leather card holder. It worked like a champ for 4 years till the clamp snapped. I still use the leather card holder but use a binder clip from staples.

I have the Coach Water Buffalo Money Clip Card Case. It works well and should last almost forever.

They're not cheap but I received a nice monogrammed money clip from Tiffany's, which is sterling silver as a gift. They had a decent looking one at Coach and I believe places like Macy's and Nordstrom's carry them.

Agreed on the materials, sterling silver will cost you. Most of the accessory shops will have them. I went to a number of places (high end and low end) including Tiffany's, Tumi, Bally's, etc. I think you really just need to find something that fits your style and budget. My clip was a huge splurge and I really enjoy it. The only issue is that the material is meant to be super shiny, but ends up getting scratched when I have it in my pocket with other items.

Perhaps that should be another consideration when selecting (how you'll carry it). Consider trying online vendors (i.e. etsy) for something homemade that looks more unique also.

Used to use money clips for years, the last ones were the Money Clamp (which I really liked). Now for the last months I have switched to a Mitchell Leather Money Clip wallet:
    http://www.mitchell-leather.com/Other_Products.html
It holds a good amount of money, but also many cards, and I have it in my front pocket. My back problems seem to be a bit lesser since my wallet in not longer so thick in my back pocket.

+1 for the Mitchell. I have one of these and like to use it when I don't want everyone in the world know that I have cash to flash on me. There are a number of options for a money clip (check out Tumi's website for a clip/card holder that doesn't fold) that maintain a slim profile. The Mitchell money clip wallet is one of those that has a classic look, is simple and you can choose a leather to boot. Recommend you check it out.
