Default Let's discuss Gucci Pour Homme II

This gets positive reviews from the critics, yet I still think of it as an overlooked fragrance that doesn't get the hype as other well reviewed frags.

When I first tested this months ago, I liked but didn't love it. Smelled a bit like licorice. Sweet. Did not buy it at the time.
Smelled it again today and find it to be quite pleasant. Doesn't have the "major wow factor" as Tim Gunn would say, but still very good.

What do you think of this scent?

I like it - got the 100 ml edt version.
Very nice bottle presentation, very subtle nice sweet tea note with added bergamot and violet leaf.

Projection is discrete, longevity too short - 5-7 hours, the perfect office scent IMHO

It is ok...I wore it back in 2008. I grew tired of it.

I'd smelled it when it first came out, thought it okay - nothing too flash. I bought it blind a couple of weeks back, because it was going cheap and they didn't have a tester.

I'm still pretty ho-hum about it. It might be better in summer.
I'm not sure what has captivated some people to cause the ultra-enthusastic praise for the scent - which for some reason I've come across a lot of in the last few months. It's not a Gucci 1, Gucci Envy, Gucci Rush or a Gucci Nobile.

    Regards,
    Renato

It may get some interest because it's close to a clean, fresh scent, but it's different in that it's not an aquatic, not citrus, and not a sport scent. The black tea note is somewhat unusual, and it's also not a heavy gourmand or 80's powerhouse. It won't offend anyone, but it's not likely to get too many fanatical followers, either. I thought it was mild, pleasant and very safe to wear to the office, and sometimes that's all you want.

I like the scent but find that they projection is awful. Debating whether to buy. I like MI also but find that one too be poor sillage.

Funny you should say that. Just yesterday, in another thread I mentioned that Provence Sante Green Tea dried down into a tea/black licorice accord that is way better than its sounds and that I love. It's not very sweet, though, and it becomes a skin scent in just a couple of hours. But if you're in the market for a tea fragrance, you might try that one. It's both cheap and readily available, which can't be said for the discontinued Gucci II. I owned it and sold it.

I don't think it is. It is the original that is discontinued. Lalique Eqqus smells incredibly similar to Gucci II. As mentioned, I have not worn it for several years. I got a decant of Lalique Eqqus a few months back and for the first two days I wore it I was going crazy because I knew it smelled exactly like something I use to wear. I finally remembered it was Gucci II.

If you find Gucci II does not last on you, give Eqqus a try. It is very cheap (online) as well.

GPH I was an almost-buy for me. Is it still in production?

Gucci I is discontinued. Gucci II is still listed on the Gucci site, but it has disappeared from a lot of retail sites and stores.

YMMV, but I don't think Gucci II smells anything like Equus, and I've owned them both. Equus is often compared to Gucci I due to the supposed cedar note, though I've never really agreed to that comparison. Gucci II is generally considered a tea scent, even if the Gucci site doesn't say that. Have to admit, though, that Gucci II and Equus share the violet and bergamot notes.

Really? Anything like it? I think the similarities are vast. Obviously not exact.....but way closer than not.

Matt555, I don't smell any similarities, really, but you aren't the only one who does. I checked BaseNotes during lunch, and one of the reviewers wrote about a dominant tea note in Equus. Many more, however, pointed to the cedar, which is the hallmark of Gucci I, not Gucci II. This is a strong case for always trying a fragrance before buying it because our noses are not all the same.

I have a 100ml bottle of it and wore it pretty exclusively for a few years before I started all this fragrance exploration. I like it a lot still. Its got a green top from the violet leaf that fades quickly and leaves a cinnamon tea scent with an underlying musk and generic wood smell that lasts for a few hours. It kinda straddles the line between a warm and cool scent and its not quite a gourmand but it doesn't fit into any other category so its pretty unique. The downside is that it doesn't project a whole lot and it only lasts 4 hours or so. I just wore it a couple days ago while flying, its perfect for those situations as it won't annoy anyone around yet you still smell nice.

Okay....we need some more people to weigh in on this. Anyone else tried both Gucci II and Equus? This is a perfect example (as Mr. Styptic stated) that proves everyone's nose is different.

The one difference I do remember between the two, again, to my nose at least, is that Equus was spicier. A note pyramid I found says it contains mace (which I think is like clove?) so maybe that is why.
