    Default lets talk about rum

First of all why is the rum gone? I had to, but on to a serious note. What is your favorite light rum for mixing? What are your favorite dark rums? I've had your general bottom rung supermarket rums. Bacardi all I taste is booze in the standard and syrup in their flavored. Captain I cannot do anymore after a very bad experience in my youth. The light will primarily be used for mixing things along the lines of mojitos and a couple other mixed drinks of the sort.

I am very fond of Barboncourt. I have only tried the dark ones. I like 3 and 5 Start. They are both very reasonably priced for what you get. I discovered Barboncout when I was in Turks and Caicos. It was what all the expatriates were drinking. Have glass of 5 Star with a Cuban cigar and you will have a little slice of heaven!

For clear rum I like Mount Gay. Its cheap(like $13 dollars) and tasty. For dark rum I like Goslings or a brand called Kilo.

I'm no rum connoisseur but I got a bottle of this stuff when I was in Puerto Rico and really enjoyed it. It was good enough to drink it neat.

I like rum. Rum does not like me. Chalk it up to my precocious youth.

Myer's Rum from Jamaica is great stuff.

Havana Club 7 years is my go to rum usually

Ron Matusalem Gran Reserva was originally from Cuba but now made in the Dominican Republic.

Other than the Havana Club, the other two are a bit difficult to find around here. However, if you can get either, they are worth the try.

Of course I would get shot if a Canadian would forget the Screech from Newfoundland...

Try the Pyrat XO Reserve. It's awesome. You think your toes are in the sand with a tropical breeze in your hair.

My favorite for mixing is Ron Abuelo from Panama, just the standard version without any number of years aged stated on it. Farily reasonable in the handle size. May be hard to get. I first had it in Costa Rica. A couple of Washington, DC liquor stores have just gotten it. Apparently a mixture of rums distilled from molasses and rums distilled from cane juice, but all from the same plantation or whatever. Just seems to taste like RUM!!! to me. I also like St. James Plantation rums for mixing, but I realize that is a minority position!

The longer aged versions are pretty good, too. But I would not say that they reach the heights of, say, Ron Zacapa.

For aged rum, I like the Barbancourt 5 star (8 yr) and Flor de Cana 12 yr.

For dark rum, my current favorite is The Kraken (it's a dark spiced rum--great for a dark and stormy or rum and coke)

For light rum, Flor de Cana 3 yr is hard to beat.

For silver rum, I like plain old Bacardi Silver.

I always go for Myer's rum. Especially in rum cakes.

+1 on Zacapa. My father-in-law often brings me a bottle on his visits from Guatemala, where he is from. OP is looking for a mixer, though-I wouldn't mix Zacapa at gunpoint.

I never buy rum, but on the rare occasions in the past when I have I believe I just picked up the default Bacardi, so fat lot of help I am.

Jp, I got myself a bottle of Kraken yesterday - never saw it before, and demolished a fair bit of it last night. I don't know if there are other varieties, but this one was the spiced dark rum, and it smells and tastes like it's already been drowned in Coke (a kind of reverse pre-mix).

As for mixing rum, don't know if you can get this OS, but Down Under we have Inner Circle Black Dot which is 75.9% OP. You could drink it neat (as I do), or degrease your engine block with it.

I do not like spiced rums, so no Pyrate, Kraken or other adulterated rum will be recommended by me. :)

For mixing I prefer to use something that I would drink neat. If the alcohol doesn't have a good taste to it neat why should I expect it to make a really good cocktail?

Someday, I may find a light rum that suits my taste but I have not yet discovered one.
For Island/dark rums I tend to choose Pussers Navy rum, Barbancourt, appleton's estate will do in a pinch and Zacapa is a nice tot.

For mojitos and such I think you can't beat the Havana Club white rum. I also very much enjoy their 7 year old on the rocks.

I also have to mention El Dorado, I have had the 12 and 15 year olds and I find them outstanding! The 15 is wasted in a mixed drink IMO. I have had the 12 both mixed and neat/rocks.

A co-worker picked up some Bacardi Oakheart a while ago, and it is actually pretty good with coke, kind of like an alcholic vanilla coke. :)
