How do you store / organize your sweaters?

I have a few cardigans I wear in the cooler months, and was wondering how you all store / organize your sweaters. Currently, mine are folded on a chest at the foot of the bed.

I've seen "sweater hangers", but many people suggest folding the sweaters to avoid stretching and misshapen shoulders. Mine are all fairly lightweight. Do the sweater hangers work? I am referring to the ones that are usually 1/2" or so wide, and either plastic, or covered in some type of cloth.

Sorry if this seems like a silly question, just wondered if anyone had any suggestions.

The Mrs. and my sweaters are stored folded and stacked on the top shelfs of our walk-in wardrobes.

Perhaps it'd work better if they were folded "in" a chest?

Folded (anywhere) works much better than sweater hangers.

It's an old cedar chest that belonged to my grandparents. At some point, my grandmother told me the unfinished cedar inside would be detrimental to fabric. Not 100% sure if there's any truth to this. I think I'm going to stack them on shelves in the closet when I reorganize it tonight.

I live in moth country so everything wool gets stored in rubbermaid boxes during the hot season.

Well, if there are splinters and jagged edges, that might cause some rips, tears, and general wear. Other than that, I don't see it being a problem.

In fact, cedar is often used for sweater storage in an attempts (don't know how well it actually works, though) to repel moths. So the fact that it's cedar is no negative and maybe a positive. The extent of unfinishing ... I'll leave that to your judgment call, being able to see the chest first-hand.

My sweaters are folded and inside "space bags".

It keeps their shape and protects them from anything that might decide that the merino wool / cashmere would make a tasty meal. The air squeezes out and I then put the bags under the bed for the summer.

In the fall, they will be back on the closet's shelf.

I own one for the odd occasion that I find myself in Europe in the winter, so it's folded, laying in a wardrobe somewhere. Always takes me ages to find it when I need it!

Definitely folded and kept on a shelf in my closet. I have always found hangers to stretch out my sweaters and even worse they leave what I refer to as unsightly "shoulder nipples"...b/c of my broad shoulders, my hangers tend to end mid shoulder on my of my clothes.
