    Default I Love Hot Dogs

Hopefully everyone enjoyed their pre-, post-, and/or actual Fourth of July festivities. I always look forward to eating a couple of good hot dogs on the fourth.
Just wondering how folks like theirs dressed. I have a couple of favorites, but would be interested in what the fine gentlemen of B&B were putting their dogs. Bun and weiner (Würstchen) recommendations welcome.

P.S. I really had to restrain myself from all the double entendre opportunities this post offered. You're welcome

...and I like mine with sautéed onions, different 'topshelf' relishes / mustards, slaw and banana peppers, but nix on ketchup.

However...the Mrs. 'needs' ketchup on hers.

I had an excellent hotdog today with caramelised onions that tasted almost like they had branston pickle mixed in with them, with the right dog I think that'd be a great addition

My favorite way to have a hotdog is as a "Texas Turbo Dog" (not my recipie, but amazing nonetheless).

essentially its a hotdog sliced down the middle, filled with jalapeno slices and extra sharp Cheddar cheese, wrapped in bacon and grilled to perfection. Then I plop it in a bun, and add sourkraut, horseradish, and plenty of mustard.

if i have a normal hotdog, i just put mustard and sourkraut on it.

BEHOLD the culinary genius of Texas. Man, that sounds tasty. I was born and raised in The Friendly State. I will try one of these this week.

I actually prefer mine steamed or boiled, Hebrew National or Nathans, on a bun with a little mustard. Bratwurst on the other hand, always on the grill, sometimes with 'kraut, sometimes with a long sliced garlic pickle, and always with some spicy mustard.

We have hot dog day every other Friday at work. We have a hot dog roller and we just charge $1 a dog to keep the thing funded. We get a variety of dogs and brats. Most important; we always use potato rolls

If I am making them, the onions have to be raw (same with burgers). The only time I will do sautéed onions is from a street vendor. But I haven't had a vendor dog since moving from Cleveland 20 years ago. I also use spicy mustard, and, occasionally, ketchup.

The all-beef Oscar Meyer hot dogs aren't bad; they remind me of what the cheap hot dogs used to taste like when I was a kid (which is a sad comment on how the quality of everyday food items has declined, I suppose).

After someone on here linked to a youtube vid of how they make "mechanically seperated" poultry, it is all beef for me. I'll leave the squished chicken guts for someone else.

My favorite topping is a spicy-sweet pepper relish, usually found in Amish groceries. I've tried several but Jake and Amos is the best I've found so far. Jake and Amos is good enough that no other topping is needed.
Many hot dogs are within you.

I think a more important question is, what brands of hot dogs do people like?

I used to hate hot dogs growing up because all I ever ate were Ball Parks and Oscar Meyer's. But since moving to western NY, I've discovered naturally cased Zweigles which are phenomenal. Here they're called "hots" instead of hot dogs and are generally sold as "white" or "red". "White hots" are a combination of pork and veal while "red hots" are beef and pork. Either of them are phenomenal and much better than hot dogs that I had as a kid.

In any case, I prefer the Chicago-style hot dog when someone else is making it. At home, I go with a simple spicy mustard and raw onion.
Please don't tempt me to buy anymore.

Lately I've been doing onion, jalapeno, sweet and dill relish, mustard and diced tomato. Oh yea and there is a dog hidden in there somewhere...Kind of a home made Sonic Drive Inn Chicago Dog.

Perhaps it's because I grew up with these local favorites (the red's are superb as well), but they have a special restricted blood flow place in my heart. Natural casing - you should be able to pick them up at a Wegmans near you (if you're in the northeast US). Grill them until they pop open...

    A true summertime treat.

This thread inspired me to grill some hot dogs tonight. Thank you Perrito Incognito. I enjoyed my Hebrew National dogs with ketchup and mustard.

+1! I'm a sucker for the white Zweigles. They are soooo good.

Unfortunately, not everyone has a Wegmans. Hopefully Wegmans will spread out more because everyone should have a grocery store like it in their neighborhood.
