    Question Shavette questions

Looking at getting a shavette, any recommendations to the "best" one?

I do have a straight razor, but it needs restored and honed (received it as a PIF). And its not that i dont want a straight, i just do not have the space or time to strop, hone, and general upkeep on them (my job has crazy hours and i dont always have time), i was looking at the dovo (all stainless), the dovo solingen (matte stainless) or the parker sr1? Any thoughts on to which one provides the closest shave to a straight as im going to transition once i can (and restore this razor).

    thanks.

There are quite a few threads asking similar questions, and I think a consensus was formed that all shavettes will serve you well. However many felt the Parker is a better choice due to a sturdier build, but many were happy with the Dovo as well.

No argument that a Feather AC can't be beat for feel, quality, and premium price.

I personally have a Parker, 2 Feathers, but never tried a Dovo.

Thanks for the input, i saw and read many other threads but they seemed old/dead so figured id ask again. Id like to get a feather but the cost of $100+ razor just isnt in the budget. Which parker do you have, the SR1?

I have a Parker, it's my travel razor. It works great. A tube of Mollinard Rasoline, the Parker, a pack of razor blades and it's time to hit the road.

I have a Parker. Since it is disposable blades, the blades are less forgiving. What I mean is, it will cut you. Actually nicked my chin this morning. First in a long time. But that being said, for 20$ it is a great razor.

I have a Parker. Got it at Sally's for 10 bucks. Works fine for a shavette. No problems with the design at all. Edit: Just noticed they have a different brand on their website. Maybe they stopped carrying it. You can get it numerous places, though.

IMHO you'll be hard pressed to beat any of the Parker straights. Any of them are well made straights and hold the blade very securely. The price is right on them, and the beat the Dovo hands down. The Dovo is also quite expensive, and I don't feel it will shave as well as the Parker.

+1 for the Parker shavette. If you want something that's close weight wise to an actual straight, the SR1 all stainless is the way to go.

I used to own a Feather Artist Club RG and Parker SR1. I would skip the Parker SR1. It is far too light and DE blades are not forgiving at all. It will most definitely cut you but hopefully not too badly. It doesn't shave anything like a straight razor due to its improper balance/weight. It is in its own league (for better or worse). It will give a nice shave and is cheap which are both good qualities.

The Feather AC RG is expensive but worth it. Its weight and balance feels like a straight razor. The Feather blades are very sharp initially but mellow out after a couple of shaves and will then shave just like a regular straight, i.e. forgiving and smoothly. LadyKate has a great thread about his experience with the Feather system and blades that would be worth checking if you want to hear how they perform.

Seriously, skip the Parker SR1 and invest that $20 toward a Feather AC RG. Or post a WTB in the BST for a Feather and I'm sure you'll get a good deal.
Please don't tempt me to buy anymore.

    If I knew someone was reading it, I would have dressed it up. ;-}

I just noticed that noone213 (eBay) has CJBs for sale for $50 BIN and $10 shipping with a pack of blades included. It looks like he may be drop shipping them from Korea. Someone just scarfed it up but I sent him a message asking if he had more - I suspect he does. $60 to get started with a real shaver isn't too bad at all. Careful use of the razor and you have 6 months of blades or, if you are Serphim, 10 years worth! (Serephim stropped his blades with great results). I found the CJB to be a very acceptable clone. Paco may have some for about the same price, too.

Awesome guys thanks, ive been away doing crazy work hours and im glad to see that the parker is well liked.

@drocu - i want the feather AC SS (the folding one with the black handle) but im just not sure on it (mainly due to price and the blades options are only feathers from what ive been reading) if it offered more blades (milder to begin with) than it wouldnt be bad to ask for a gift but thats $100 for a razor, $25 for blades and i still have no idea if the straight thing is for me or not, ya know.

i was looking at the KAI's as well but they seemed to be in the same ballpark as the Feather ACs (if their blades are cross compatible than the feather seems like the way to go). just my thoughts, thanks all for the help, im just very conscious of where my money goes and buying junk is like throwing the cash away.

I have a Parker and it is nice, however if you are looking for the closest thing to a straight razor, you should consider looking for a vintage Weck shavette. They can usually be had for around $10 on eBay. You can get blades for them at Sally Beauty supply.

the weck sextoblade looks intriguing but what are the options for blades as many people (on other forums) have said the Fromm ones don't fair them too well (and there arent many NOS sextoblade boxes around)

Fromm and Personna make "hair shaper" blades that fit the Wecks. I have both, but have yet to try the Fromms.

Been using the Dovo Stainless Steel. Have all the blade holders: Red ( derby, dorco etc..), Green ( Personna ), Black ( Tondeo ). Excellent for details such as goatee, beard, shapeups, around ears, nape area etc.
