I believe what you say, but even Conk's web site states "Makers of world famous glycerine shave soap". http://www.col-conk.com/

But if it's wrong, then it's wrong. That gives me even less confidence in the product.

Lots of triple milled and tallow soaps are made with a vegetable fat base as opposed to an animal fat base.

FYI, Williams is a tallow soap.

    Very interesting thanks.

Yes, it says it's a glycerine soap. It doesn't say "glycerine based". The soap does contain glycerine. Remember, marketers are trying to find a way to make their product attractive to their potential consumer so pointing out that feature plays to their advantage. The presence of glycerine in a shaving soap is generally perceived as a good thing so they have wisely pointed out of the strength of their product. It may be the only strength but, hey, that's what marketing is all about.

Remember, Valobra makes a menthol shaving soap. That doesn't mean it's menthol based, it just means it contains menthol as a featured ingredient.

Col. Conk is not a fantastic soap, but I don't get the hate directed at it by the OP. It's pretty much like VDH with a choice of four scents and two sizes for a slight bump in price over VDH. If I can get a low price and free shipping, I'm not opposed to buying the stuff off Amazon, as that's where I normally see it.

I am more likely to spend a little less for Williams or VDH while shopping locally, or spend just a little bit more and get a choice of so many scents from Mama Bear.

    Default More About Col. Conk

Not that this makes any difference WRT the quality (or lack there of) of the Col. Conk soap; but very interesting none the less; Col. Ichabod Conk is indeed a fictional character. Of course, maybe you guys already knew this and are just pulling my leg.

I found this newspaper quote from the Van Nuys News, June 28, 1973, using ancestry.com. It is an image so I have to type it in:

    -----------------------------------------------------------
    (Van Nuys News -- G.S. 648)
    Fictitious Business Name Statement

The following persons are doing business as COLONEL ICHABOD CONK PRODUCTS at 11419 Moorpark St., North Hollywood, Calif. 91602.

Maurice Klein, 5830 Reseda Blvd., No. 222, Tarzana, Calif. 91356

Richard Klein, 2616 Lake Hollywood Drive, Los Angeles, Calif.

Richard Bernstein, 17020 Burbank Blvd., No. 105, Encino Calif. 91316

Louis L. Litwin, 9100 Wilshire Blvd., No. 301, Beverly Hills Calif., 90212.

This business is conducted by a general partnership.

    MAURICE KLEIN

This statement was filed with the County Clerk of Los Angeles County on June 28, 1973.

    File No. 73-16132
    Publish June 28; July 5. 12. 19. 1973.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------

The legal requirement for the filing described above I believe comes from here:

    http://rrcc.lacounty.gov/Clerk/Business_Name.cfm

I will also say that I saw no census entry, birth certificate, death certificate, marriage certificate, or military commission on ancestry.com for anyone named Ichabod Conk. For this reason plus the legal filing I cited above (which is the only thing I did find with that name), I don't they guy ever existed.

But I could be wrong. If someone finds something, please do tell.

    [top]Company Info

Col. Ichabod Conk is an American company selling shaving (and some other grooming) products. The brand gets its name from a real Colonel Ichabod Conk who after the US Civil War married a woman who owned a number of barber shops and started selling barber products. The original company ceased business after Conk's death in 1898. The current company does not manufacture its own products, and merely sells rebranded products.
