    Default Calling Ye lapping film folks! Here's a challenge for ya;

    OK friends of the lapping film.

    Here is an interesting experiment;

    Put your film on a mousepad or a thick piece of leather. instead of your usual hard surface.

    Then proceed as usual.

    The edge would in theory be stronger & maybe, just maybe have an even nicer feel to it due to the convexing.

    But women would still laugh at you and call you names behind your back for your total lack of mojo.

    Exactly, classic convex sharpening. I thought it would very interesting to see what it did for a straight razor edge.

    How about adhering to a hanging strop and strop your way to shave ready? Do you think it would lead to a fin edge?

    Interesting!

    The main problem I see with that though is that it would be darn near impossible to keep the convexing consistent thru out.
    I can't see how anyone could keep the strop at the exact same taughtness (is that a word??) thru out a full honing session.
    Perhaps then a loom strop would be better.
    But doable?
    Absolutely, no reason you cant make a razor sharp with spine leading only.
    The differences are really miniscule edge leading vs. edge trailing.

    I only use one mousepad and it has a picture of Hello Kitty holding a bouquet of rainbows. Does that up the "WOW" factor if I can pull it off?

    I tried a MMOC once. I've sinced switched to straight razor shaving because it was less dangerous.

    Tautness.

    Interesting thought experiment. My guess would be that the advantages of a convex edge on a relatively thick knife edge would be lost on the vanishingly thin razor edge. Looking for to responses from folks who actually give it a shot.

    But on a more serious note, I would suspect that the convexing would change, ever so slightly, the angles you would position the razor at for the shave? I'm thinking about the ATG pass on my neck where I've got the blade damn near flat against my face. I would expect that convexing would put that edge just oh so slightly "floating" above the skin...which may not necessarily be a bad thing.

    Interesting. I may have to try this.

    Edge leading might dig in if the base is too soft - but other than that, I suspect you could get a good edge. When I first heard of lapping film, I bought a pack from 'bestsharpeningstones' which cost quite a bit. When I received the package, the film had a backing paper and it was self sticking - which was probably why it was so expensive compared to the non-backed paper. I used it that way (without pulling the backing paper which was fairly thick) and it worked fine. When I got the cheaper spread, I used my own backing paper for it for all the grit sizes. Again, it worked fine and the film 'darkened' much more evenly.

    I think your skin has enough elasticity in it that the edge of the blade would not "float" over the skin.

    Thanks!

    Another word they didn't teach us in English-class.

    What were they thinking? How are we supposed to survive in a global world without being able to express these important honing matters properly??

    Putting paper underneath the film adds a tiny bit of cushioning already. i'd be hesitant to do a convex edge on a razor because of the trailing strokes.

    Interested in this idea.

    This.

    It's the whole idea behind PicoPaper. It's also the reason I'm a proponent of pastes on a hanging strop versus the hoi paloi who paste unquestioningly on hard balsa.

    I know the mousepad idea comes from the knife sharpening world, but I think it's overkill for razors. But hey, if someone wants to give it a go....
