chips

so I got a pretty nice razor from Larry at whipped dog, got about 4 shaves out of it and accidently dropped the damn thing in the sink. now I have what looks like two very small (hard to see) chips close to the point of the blade. is this something that can be honed out? I was thinking of getting some lapping film and useing this as an opportunity to learn to hone, but if small chips like this is something that cant be honed out I'd like to know before hand.
I will try to get a picture of it posted tomorrow.

Pics helps a lot in seeing the damage. But from your description they should come out fine.

I did the same thing with my Le Grelot Lord Barber, it hurt my heart but it had one chip in the edge very, very small that I had to hunt for. I knew it was possible becuase of the drop when I found it, I knew the edge was ruined. I was able to hone it out with ease and I didnt take off very much of the over 6/8's width. After this it actually feels sharper than before, its just as smooth and the edge retention is longer due to getting into that new steel. So a win really.

Need a picture but 'hard to see' chips are actually more common that you might believe. You should be able to hone it out. Did you get the barber's hone with the kit? If so, you could probably take it out with that. Go slow, use water as a lubricant and maybe lather for the later stages of polishing. Use the pasted paddles to finish it.

I bet lots of us have dropped a razor. The biggy is to NOT try to catch it. A few months back, I bought an 8/8 Wosty that was NOS and it was a beauty. I honed it up and on about the fourth stroke, dropped it into the sink. I closed my eyes and opened them one at a time hoping it was all in one piece. It was, but damn... that was NOT what I wanted to do.

Damn sinks are evil.

FYI, watch out for that deceptively rounded tip. You see how it's sharpened a bit up the side? That will make a real nice 1/2" slice in your cheek, and once you realize you've done that, and decide to take extra care with the tip, you'll slice a 1/" in the other cheek.

I mean, that's what I hear. *I* certainly wouldn't put matching slices on my cheeks in a single shave....

sounds like a good idea. thanx again. now we play the waiting game. I have some lapping film on the way and another razor to continue my shaving with while I learn to hone this one. the wait is killing me.
