Salter is a pretty standard light generic Lavender cologne scent...it smells just like T&H Luxury and Vintage Blades Lavender shave soap BTW. All 3 of these were absolute unlatherable garbage for me, which I documented in a thread on a huge number UK soaps awhile back. All 3 ended up in the trash can too.

I do agree that a real fougere in a top performing soap is a big missing link. Too bad I missed out on the Valobra Fougere, or Pen's old formula EF. I agree MdC fougere bath soap smells wonderful and I'd love to see them do shave soap with the scent. That would certainly be a top favorite for me if it ever came on the market.

I've tried Pen's Blenheim Bouquet (sp?) cream and it's among the best I've sampled, but I keep reading bad stuff about their soaps. Are they really that much worse than the creams?

There's also the (also no longer made) Fougere Royale shaving soap.

It's quite disappointing that Penhaligon's reformulated their English Fern shaving soap as it was/is excellent and the reformulated version is pretty bad. I found the reformulated EF slightly better than the reformulated BB, which was unusable. Still, even the EF was a lot of work to get a barely passable lather. It'd be great if one of the artisan companies (e.g. Queen Charlotte Shave) could make one with a similar scent ...

DRH Arlington is one choice if you can overlook the citrus top notes.

I have several of Mr. Retzloff's soaps and croaps that are fantastic, and after finally having my first shave with his signature "Queen Charlotte", I have no doubt he could hit a Foguere out of the park.

The QC signature is something no one should miss out on.

A favorite soap of mine to be sure, but until you've smelled this MdC hand soap, it's hard to describe how FERN and wonderful it is. A completely different sensory experience than Arlington.

I hope Marie responds to my inquiry soon with something encouraging.

I have got to be missing something with the lack of love for the Penhaligon's English Fern. I picked up a puck about a month ago and, while it's not the easiest to lather, with a little more work than typical, I've found it can produce dense slick lather with a smell that lasts for hours. And it's smell is absolutely fantastic. I guess YMMV.

+1 on the Jermyn St. too. While not a true fougere smell (definitely more aquatic) it's a good smell and a good performer.

I think the new DR Harris Windsor is closer to a Fougere than the others. No? Very green. Great stuff. I like the citrus notes of Arlington better, but Windsor is much greener.

Ok, I'm resurecting this thread because I'm now in the same boat as xraygun. I got a sample of the MdC Foguere bar from Garry and I cannot get enough of this scent! So good, I gotta get my hands on some more of the body soap before this sample runs out.

I am totally in with whatever kind of effort you guys want to make to try and have a foguere shave soap made. And if QCS could make one in their croap form, that would be the bees knees!!

One of the things that I love about the new Windsor scent. It's a nice crisp and clean citrus opening that then dries down to a peppery, powdery, foguere scent. I didn't notice it the first time I wore the EdT, but after using the MdC body soap, I immediately noticed the nice foguere base note in the Windsor the next time I wore it.

Your best bet is to post a WTB for Pen's tallow-first EF shave soap. You will occasionally see one pop up on the B/S/T so there might be someone out there willing to part with a puck. I'm down to my last 1/3 of the my last puck . The old tallow-first EF soap was simply outstanding, an incredible scent combined with incredible performance. If no luck on that, then hopefully one of our excellent artisan soap makers will come up with a Fougere scent soon.

Never smelled this MDC soap but reading this description below I thought of C&E Nomad, which does have coumarin in it.

Coumarin can be found in nature in several plants, such as Tonka beans, and it possesses intensive scent of freshly mown grass. Fougere compositions include notes of lavender, geranium, moss and wood. This group primarily includes perfumes for men. "

While that is a solution, I am not sure it's a very viable solution. Pen's English Fern typically retails from around $65 (with the wooden bowl). If you figure in the price premium for it being a vintage, discontinued, tallow based soap it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect a price point of around $100. I personally don't think any shaving soap is worth $100.

    I don't think so.

While a great scent, it has more wood and citrus grass tones than I would expect in a fougere type of scent.

In fougere, I think fern, moss, oakmoss tones should be prevalent. It should be 'green' either way.
That, combined with maybe a hint of herby lavender.

I think Pen's English fern and reportedly Wild Fern by GFT are classic fougeres.
But we'd have to check the Official Osmotheque handbook for that :-)

    Here are the ingredients.
