what brands are recommended?

My advice is to get what appeals to you. You'll be replacing the knot so the brand doesn't matter so much in that respect.

I recently learned that Lee Valley Tools sells 20mm Black Badger knots for under $10. They often have free shipping promotions. I do not know what the quality of these knots are, but I have bought tools from them for more than 25 years and their service is excellent. The tools have always been of ecxellent quality(unless they are described otherwise in their catalogue)
