@whavens....i actually went to the Broadway version when it toured Canada and made it's premier stop in my city. PT was supposed to be there for the premier, but never made it. It was an amazing sceptical of music, singing, performance, i'd recommend it for any music fan to see, not just Who fans.

Yes it is, and Stairway to heaven is the second best rock song ever made. Hard to decide on the third. Maybe Black Country Woman or All of My Love or In The Evening. I don't know.

The "New Yardbirds" put together by Jimmy Page and later to become Led Zeppelin took the harder edge Rock and Roll to a whole new dimension, IMO. I have owned "Led Zeppelin IV" in probably every media type it was produced on.

Not many guitarist can match Page's hands, IMO. Although, I think that the more current Joe Satriani has blazing hands, too.
In contrast, to me, Pete Townshend had a more power chord style and probably influenced Johnny Ramone's style...who was one of the best chord bangers, IMO.

I have fond memories of The Who and Led Zeppelin. Both, masters of completely different interpretations on Rock.
Maybe a better question for the comparison would be 'which style of rock is your favorite between the two' ?

    Just my 2˘ worth :)

    Led Zeppelin for me, I bought my first LZ record 1982 when I was 8 years old and I still listen to them. But for all fans of The Who I´d like to share this story;

I used to listen to The Who a lot when I was a teenager and at that time I had an English teacher who was a proper man of great authority and dignity. Absolutely not the kind of man you want to trouble. While visiting London in 1964 he sat in a café and a new, unknown (at least for him) band was playing, too loud for him. So he went up where the band was playing and told the singer to turn the volume down and… They did!

I asked him if the story was true and he answered yes. Telling Roger Daltrey, singer of the loudest rock band, to turn the volume down made him the coolest guy on the planet at that moment.

To sum up, I know my grammar has errors but don´t blame him, he did the best he could and he was a great guy.

For me Zep is my fav of the two choices. Pretty wide margin. Not to diminish the significance of The Who, but in my world, Zep is either #1 or #2 all time (Beatles being the 'other').

Without question Led Zeppelin! The Who don't even come close.

...but then neither Led Zeppelin or the Who could come remotely close to Emerson, Lake & Palmer or to Santana for that matter.

All of the bands I mentioned in this post had great guitar players, but I have to say the best guitar player on the planet is without question Jeff Beck.

Should you disagree with that last statement then music is nothing more to you than acoustic wallpaper!

I voted for LZ only because I could not "write-in" for The Faces or Procol Harum.

PT is a gifted composer and plays most of his solos in a more compositional chord progression theme. Page is a master of rock guitar solos. He is both creative and technically proficient. I don't hear him using his technique simply as technique (as many of his future imitators did), but in the service of the musical line. He also did some interesting things with meter (Black Dog).

Tommy is a work of genius. Both drummers were excellent, but Moon was more fun to watch. Entwistle probably had the edge there. Both great singers. I suspect LZ was more influential on future music makers.

excellent points, and i agree on all of them.

thanks for chiming in everyone, i love reading about thoughts on both these bands as well as your comparrisons and thoughts on each of the members and who you thing are better then both of them. i have a deep interest in both, so it's all good in my books. no matter what anyone says, i love them both, with an edge to The Who.

    Bruce,

If you can find a decent vinyl copy, I'd probably recommend starting with "Arthur". That one and "Village Green" are the most critically acclaimed albums they've done.

I also think you'd really dig the Pretty Things S.F. Sorrow LP...that's a bit harder rocking stuff yet never feels bloated even though it's a "rock opera".

My personal favorite Kinks LP is "Something Else" but it may be a little "twee" for some folks. Honestly though, any of their LPs including and through "Muswell Hillbillies" are all great listens with the possible except of the first one because half of it is bog standard R&B covers...all the good songs early on went to the singles.

BTW, if you cant find the vinyl in good shape, just get the latest crop of UK 2XCD reissues (3xCD for Village Green!)...they're the best sounding CD versions that are easily available.

like cvac said, there were many great bands from this era that got overshadowed by The Who and the Mod scene etc and i'm not going to deny that many are very underrated. i do like The Kinks, but never gave them the chance they probably deserve. Outside a few songs and the fantastic Rushmore Soundtrack, i don't own any Kinks, but will try to pick up a few LP's next time i'm at my local record (yes, vinyl records) store.

great points by everyone and nice to see peoples passion for these 2 great bands and how strong they feel either one way or another....but if The Who doesn't pick it up in the poll, i'm getting the mods (moderators) to shut this down

I agree on Kashmir, but Stairway gets kicked further down the list. I put The Lemon Song at number two.

on edit: #3 is Since I've Been Loving You- especially this live version

fav zep song for me..."When the Levee Breaks", but i'm sure if i was to listen to a zep album tonight (which i may) i reserve the right to change it later tonight.

i also like "no quarter" for some reason.

Both greats.. "When the Levee Breaks" - gotta love John Bonham here.

But, its probably "Whole Lotta Love" or "Black Dog" for me. Hard decision.

    Bonham was totally unique.
His son has done well to continue his style.

My friend who played drums in my band could "switch it on"... but his "natural" style was more of a hybrid between Bonham and Tommy Aldridge.
We tried to attack a few Rush tunes, but we could never get "tight" with the frequent time signature changes... funny because we never had a problem with Zep changes.

Is there any significance to the closing date on the poll? Is the next poll going to involve the Stones? I mean you did ind this one on Mick's birthday.

Two great bands but I have to give the nod to Led Zep. They are the godfathers of a whole genre. On some VH1 survey a few years ago I think Stairway to Heaven got the nod as greatest rock song. And the band was in the top five greatest. Not that VH1 is the be all and end all for this type of categorizing, but it is indicative of their greatness. I've got to say they are right behind the Beatles and Stones.
