Feather No-Sharpen Straight

Considering purchasing one of these but I'm a little hesitant due to the high cost. Anybody use one of these?

I have a Non folding Feather Artistclub SS.

It's a very fine shaver. My favorite blades are the Kai Captain Titan Mild (Pink) blades.

I use one. They are a very well made unit and if you don't care for it they have very good resale value.

Thanks guys. Is this a good straight to start out with? I thought may be a little easier not having to worry with blade prep & just focusing on a shave

It's the equivalent of a Lexus 4 series that will parallel park itself, vs a souped up BMW 2002. Kinda.

It's so sharp, so smooth, all you need to do is make sure you use a light pressure and avoid sawing movements. Easy as pie. Kinda

I used one off and on with reglar straights.
they are nice with the Kai blades.

I have a Feather AC too. I haven't used it for a month since using it for a couple of weeks trying to learn how to shave with a straight. It's a pretty good shaver. I've just been too lazy to take the time in the mornings to go slow with a straight so I went back to safety razors for the time being.

I go a bit fast with straights when I shave in the morning sometimes. Sometimes I do it with a Feather Pro Super loaded in. It's a wonder that I have only cut myself once that way!

A couple of months ago, I decided to focus my different ADs into specific areas so I wasn't buying everything. I chose Feather razors. I have purchased every version out there, SS, RG, DX - etc in both non-folder and folder versions (and multiples in a couple of cases) and even a CJB from Paco (which I used this morning - what a great deal!).

They are sharp but if you are gentle and go easy, you will get a great shave. In another thread, I'm babbling about using a single blade (a Guard no less) for as long as I can. As of today, it is 8 shaves and going fairly strong. The blade turns into more of a regular straight after a while and can be used a lot more comfortably. Indeed, I'm thinking it would be a great trainer for a new person. Keep the blade in for a while - don't swap it out until you just can't shave with it anymore. You might learn a lot and get a bunch of comfortable shaves as the blade peters out.

The cheapest version out there is a CJB and it seems to be just as good as the Feather. It isn't the very highest quality but you have to look quite closely to justify any critique. I like the handle on it, too. It isn't slippery and has a nice thumb hold that fits my hand perfectly. Paco may have one for sale (not for sure on that).

I find blade selection makes quite a difference (I have the Feather DX Teak and a KAI Captain). I like the Feather Professional Super and KAI Titan PINK (Plasma, Ion, New process by KAI) blades best. It is not really like a regular straight razor shave, but once you adjust your technique they are excellent shavers.

I find shaves 3-12 develop into much more of a regular straight razor kind of shave.

They are fantastic, at first s little harsh, but then so good.

My biggest cut is from the Feather-I treated it just like a regular straight with a new blade and it bit me on the upper cheek.

I can't say I ever found them all that harsh. The Feather Pro Supers are perhaps a bit crispy with poor lather and a bad angle, but that's all. I was expecting some radically different experience when I first used a Feather (with KAI Milds), then when I first used the Pro Supers. I was shocked that they're not all that different. Just use a low angle with a light touch and lather well first.

I don't find them harsh at all, even with the "Professional Super" blades. In fact, once you get the hang of using it - which isn't too hard if you can shave with Western straights - they are very easy to use.

Maybe crispy based on what I'm otherwise used to but not harsh.

Harsh may not be the right word-unforgiving is more like it. The feather and KAI blades give an awesome shave but can easily cut you, much more than a regular straight.

I am not a fan of any shavette type razors. But as far as they go, the Feather Artist Club is definitely at the top of the heap. And if you don't like it, somebody else will. You won't have any problem recovering a significant portion of your purchase price on ebay or BST.

Personally I think a conventional straight would serve you better. But an Artist Club won't disappoint, I don't think.
