Do you have a set of calipers? Measure the knot. I'm not sure the reason why knots are set in cups but I do not think you have to have the cup. Maybe someone who knows for sure will correct me if I am wrong. I would say if you don't need the cup and the knot is a 27mm you should be able to order a 28mm handle and it should work. Or buy a smaller handle and open it up wih a dremel. But if the knot is 27mm and you get a handle with a 30mm hole I would think that would be too big of a difference but I can't be positive because I have never tried it.

I'm thinking the cup will be helpful, since it adds some diameter. No calipers or dremel, and I'm telling myself that I'm done with new brushes (hah!) so I shouldn't be purchasing any... opening up a smaller one isn't a bad idea, though...

I have a 24mm Whipped Dog Silvertip and a 20mm TGN Silvertip Grade A. Due to the size differences, it's not quite a head-to-head comparison, but here are my findings:

    - TGN has more backbone.
    - The WD has softer tips and feels more luxurious to me (also party due to its size relative to the TGN).
    - I've lathered hard soaps (Tabac, MWF) and creams with both brushes. They both perform very well.

Both knots perform very well, and both vendors are top notch--great communication and fast shipping.

In the end, I prefer the WD (especially the price). I face lather with the WD everyday, and I really love how it feels on my face. I've bought a few more WD of varying sizes to try out, but haven't put them to the test.

Good luck with the restorations. When in doubt, buy both! =D
    My mileage doesn't vary.

The price was one of the reasons I was looking at the WD silver tips instead of the TGN. I already have some brushes with TGN Finest knots in them.

I have used both for restores, and agree with willwhatyoudo.
WD silvertip has soft tips and less backbone and a very big price advantage.
TGN silvertip grade A has more backbone and scrubbier tips.

I have a TGN Grade A and it is absolutely awesome. I have no experience with the WD, so I don't have much to compare to though.

Decided to just go for it, since it's a $10 brush. I've heard that the knot and cup just pop out, so I (idiotically) tried to pry it up and ended up doing nothing other than ruining the plastic ferrule. Sadly brought it to the boy, who happily drilled holes in the handle to weaken it up before we whacked it with a hammer (okay, we're not really pros at this). We did quite a bit of hammering (albeit on the carpet, since we didn't want to go all the way down to the street) before accepting that it wasn't about to break. The byproduct of the hammering was that we did shake the knot loose, so I ruined the ferrule in vain but now have the knot. I sanded down the remainder of the ring so that it's just barely there, and I'll need to do a little more sanding of the cup, since it's slightly bigger than 30mm. Excited to get her in a new handle, though!

I know it's a little late now, but you can buy both 24mm, and 27mm Omega Knots from The Golden Nib for $10 each:

I've seen them, but mine is so perfectly broken in...and I just ordered an SOC, so breaking in two boars simultaneously sounds like a month+ of sub-par lather.

I have both knots in 24mm x 65mm in silvertip. TGN I dropped into one the cream swrils that they sell and the whipped dog I dropped into a BG Beehive handle, both set at 51mm depth. The TGN is more of a bulb shape and has little more backbone while the whipped dog has softer tips, less backbone but diameter of fan is also wider at 51mm. I made the TGN/Swirl for birthday gift for a friend so cannot measure diameter but remember it was not as thick hence the better backbone. WD is cheaper and Larry includes oxiclean with instructions on how to pre-clean your knot with each knot. Another place to buy a really good knot is PC woodcraft and Pens. Pat has really good knots and also a little cheaper than TGN. I ordered a 28mm x 75mm overstuffed silvertip from him and arrived here in St Louis in two days from CA.

I had set a Black Badger 24mm knot into a handle with a 26mm opening, I like the extra room which gives my knot a bit more flexibility, flow-through and more "Bloom Room". You might can set your knot into the opening prior to gluing and see how it looks. If you think it won't fill the gap, dropping the loft a mm or two lower shouldn't affect the performance too much.

I have used both, The TGN has a little more backbone and the WD has softertips. This is comparing TGN standard grade to WD silvretip. If you need one knot you cant beet WD with the free shipping!

My TGN _regular_ _grade_ silvertip is horrible, I would compare it to pure badger like a tweezerman for face feel, and appears to be clipped. It has also turned into a horrible shedder. I will be cutting it out of the handle soon.

As disappointing this knot is I am thrilled with the finest XHS fan and superbadger fan from TGN.

I have a WD 24 silver tipped and love it! The WD lathers better then the 22 vulifix and a 30 col conk badger I have. the WD feels great too. Works great with soap an cream. Price over TGN's was my main consideration. I know Larry is good people. I also have Larry's black 30 but I haven't gotten around to enlarging the handle I want to use for it yet. The 24 shed for about a week and stopped so I have zero complaints about it. I don't see a need for another brush at this point, it has satisfied me that much.

Darn you guys! I just ordered the 20mm/65mm Silvertip from WD. It's going to be my first restore using an EverReady 250.

i used my WD 24mm Silvertip today for the 1st real shave (after a few tests) and can say, it is a FANTASTIC KNOT. i have not tried a TGN silvertip, but have no complaints with the WD. soft, released lather, backbone, shed a about 5-10 hairs over 3 passes and a bowl lather. it was much softer then i expected and softer then my TGN 2 band finest and still had some decent backbone.

overall, i love it. but unlike you, i still feel the need for more brushes

    (pictures tonight)

So I received the handle, and it's just as good, if not better than expected. The knot fits in quite well with a tiny bit of sanding.

Sadly, I didn't have anything to glue it in with, or I would have epoxied in the Omega knot last night. Unfortunately, in the time that has passed since then, I've realized that the new handle just deserves to have a nice virgin knot (and the place where I chipped the cup/ferrule was bothering me for no good reason). So naturally, I've ordered a new brush (248), to behead and stick into my new handle. My $15 brush improvement has morphed into $30 of brand new brush, which is still a bargain, but dammit, BAD...

*sigh* I guess I really wanted the chrome ferrule and banded knot all along, right?

I would say the WD silver tip is soft at the tips like TGN silver tip grade A, which is their softest knot. The biggest difference is the WD knot has backbone equal to the TGN two band. So you are actually getting the softest tips with the addition of very good backbone...AWESOME!!!

The WD knot is half the price but then again, tony at TGN has great knots too but the combo of the WD's soft tips and backbone is hard to beat.

The TGN super badger has good backbone but the tips are not quite as soft as the WD. The standard TGN silver tip is horrible, super scratchy, I would avoid that unless you have leather skin or enjoy a healthy dose of badger burn.

By the way, mine is set at 48mm and I'm glad its not any deeper as the backbone really is amazing.

    Default Whipped Dog Pure

Larry recently commented on a thread that he reckoned the tips of his pure brushes would soften up over time to be similar to the silvertip (this was just speculation on his part).

So anyone out there who has used one of the WD pure knots for a while that can comment on how much they soften up ? In particular it would be great you could compare this knot, when worn in, with the TGN finest or WD silvertip. Hoping that the backbone of the pure would be similar to TGN finest - that with non prickly tips would be a winner.

Just wondering if it is a diamond in the rough - as it would be a great cheap gift if it does soften up. Not that the others are crazy expensive but after shipping and exchange rates you aren't as willing to hand them out to people who may or may not stick with wetshaving.

    cheers
