I would have to pick hand lathering.
Edit: If you use a mug, just vote for bowl lathering. I didn't think to add that.

"brush n swirl" technique?
None of the above. I mug lather.
It is just soap, hot water and a sharp blade. It isn't rocket science or a Zen ritual.
2 of the 3 are unnessasry
Face, unless the soap feel a bit burny.

Bowl lather.
Face lather.
Face lather. Yer not making meringue, your'e shaving
Can someone explain what the benefit of hand lathering is? I dont get it!!
Toby
My reason for hand lathering is that I can whip the lather real hard without having to worry about dropping a bowl. This helps me get the lather well mixed and to the correct consistency quickly and easily.

Face lathering for me. It's hard to shave a bowl. Just kidding.
Well I don't prefer hand lathering over face lathering by a large margin. To me, it's just a bit easier to lather on my hand. I'm okay with face lathering though.
I use hand lathering when breaking in a new Brush, the roughness of your palm helps when your getting a newer Boar's tips to splay or testing the prickliness of a new Horse or Black Badger. When testing a new soap or cream, I like using my palm since I can feel how my lather is building, receiving feedback on its slickness and product to water ratio without stopping the building process.
If you prefer using a Bowl for Breaking in a Brush I'd recommend a Spice Mortar Bowl which has a textured bottom. They also can retain heat well and keep your lather warm when fitted over a large Cappuccino Mug filled with hot water.

Face lathering, FTW. I've tried bowl lathering, hand lathering and even using a scuttle and to me nothing prepares a beard better than face lathering.
I'm a total face-latherer. To me, using Arko stick, or KMF, is just a simple, non-messy, and effective way to shave. It's more fun to whip up soap in a mug, but I enjoy face-lathering too. And it lets me use my BIG, cheap Omega Syntex brush, which is great for the face but not so great whipping up lather in a mug.

Face lathering. I've tried the other ways to make lather and none work better for me.
Face lathering.
It's my favourite.
