    Default Any Martial Artists Here?

Just curious. I've done a small amount of perusing the boards and haven't seen any mention of it so far.

For me, I've been training in Krav Maga for the last few years. It's not a "martial art" per se; more of a self defense system, but I never know how to classify it. It's a great, aggressive--sometimes too aggressive--workout. I usually try to put in three training sessions each week with bike riding in between.

Which brings me full circle back to shaving. Often times, through training, I'll sustain some damage to the face. Maneuvering a blade around a big, raspberry contusion can be quite literally a pain.

    Anyway, just curious.

    Regards.

I did Krav Maga for about a month, but had to stop due to a knee injury. Two operations later, and can't wait for the next 9months to be over so I can start again.
(Just to mention, I had torn my meniscus, and my anterior crucial ligament playing football/soccer).

Man, I do wish you luck. KM can be brutal on the body. I know a guy a couple of years ago who had surgery on both knees and was able to come back and train albeit wisely.

    Regards.

That is why I am waiting. It will take another 9months for the knee to fully heal (it has been 3months since the second operation already). I look forward to starting again though, as over here in the UK you are allowed nothing for personal protection except yourself. I have also done Judo, and Taekwondo, but Krav Maga is what I love. It is effective, and to the point. Thanks for the well wishes, my recovery is already going well. My knee was screwed up for almost 1 and a half years. Now it is finally starting to feel good again but it is still going to be a long road...

KM has always interested me. I don't really do martial arts, but I am looking for an opening this summer to move along in the Modern Army Combatives Program.

I've done a little BJJ (the Gracie variety), but not much. Muay Thai is awesome. Both Muay Thai and BJJ are taught where I train Krav Maga. As far as Modern Army Combatives, I've not trained in that, but I've trained with a few active duty Army. I don't know for sure, but I'm assuming that they probably trained in that program? If I remember correctly it seems as though they implement quite a bit of BJJ techniques. One guy who's active duty that I've trained with has great BJJ skills.

I started with Judo for a couple years (i think i was 10 or 11yo). Then a bit of wrestling, boxing, and TaeKwonDo/HapKiDo through high school.

Mainly though, I have studied Aikido. I'm 41 now and started when I was around 20. I was a dedicated student for many years but I have a fake hip now... These days I mostly spin around in circles with a stick (well it's called Aikibojitsu and it's all spiritual and stuff but it kinda looks like spinning around with a stick real fancy-like) ;-)
Don't have a dojo anymore but I hardly ever hit myself in the head.

    Hi dlmedley-

I been training in the martial arts for quite a few years; mostly Shotokan Karate and Japanese combat jujitsu. As with Krav Maga, jujitsu can be pretty hard on the body and I am not getting any younger.

Wing chun for first 3 years out of high school .Then dont know if It counts , I did civil war reanactments for 3 years so learned bayonett drill and butt stock strikes for the Springfield black powder ( think fencing ) That led into some padded sword and shield with the local medieval times reanactors just for fun for another 2 years. FYI chain mail armor gets heavy . Now job and life doesnt leave alot of time nor does turning the big 40 this year help

I may have liked BJJ with a better teacher. And the guy may be a good teacher to some he just didn't seem right for me. Seemed more interested in sitting behind the counter surfing the internet on his phone. I would like to try more of a striking type Martial Art like Muay Thai just to get the heart rate up. There is no Krav Maga place in my area. Maybe soon someone will open one.

Yeah, Matt Larson designed the MACP, and it does implement a lot of BJJ, but it has evolved a bit more into real world situational training, especially the deeper you get into it and the more serious you are about it. It uses a lot of stick fighting in the higher levels too. The better run courses will PT the hell out of you in the morning and after lunch before you even start class. This warms your body up, but also fatigues it making it a little less difficult to go full on 100% during rolling sessions which I guess decreases the risk of hurting someone.

I've been to one place where they had an abandoned building that they used for a more "off the books" training site where they trained in full combat uniform, body armor and helmets, and had chains and stuff placed around that you could use.

I've been practising Aikido for the last 10 years (I did some Japanese Jiu Jitsu before that), and also train in Kick Boxing and Jim Wagner's Reality-Based Personal Protection System.

I think that the quality of the teacher matters more than the style one is training in.

    Great responses, all.

I have a friend in MMA/BJJ and that interests me somewhat, but I won't lie, I have to get myself in much better shape before embarking! Judo is a curiosity too, I'm a big guy, so the more "airborne" types of martial arts just aren't going to happen, but I like the "leverage" styles.

I've dabbled but never excelled in any one discipline. Capoeira was my latest foray. Sometimes I miss it, but I feel lucky to have left with all my teeth and only a few hard hits, one of which left me with a hangover feeling for a few days. Spinning kicks to the head are not good for the brain to receive.

As for Krav Maga that's most definitely a martial art in my books. 'Martial' refers to war and KM looks like a modern system of person v. person(s) war. The term 'martial arts' has connotations of people practicing certain styles, often eastern and often in clothing connected to that style. Archery is actually a martial art though and I remember being taught that the bow and arrow was/is one of the symbols of Japan. Small arms marksmanship is a martial art in my books though most people don't think of it as such. All this to say, don't think you're not practicing a true martial art. It may not be steeped in centuries of tradition but it's got to be one of the most brutally practical forms out there.

I am jealous. Krav maga looks awesome.

With respect to the bumps and bruises I can almost hear one of my old teacher's voices, 'Keep your hands up and don't lead with the chin'.
I was a slow learner, but the pops to the head when I left an opening helped to reinforce the instruction.

I've been doing a Kali and Silat system for the past year it's a mix of hand to hand, grappling, stick and knife. Interestingly enough you can see Spanish influences in the system some of the techniques have a striking similarity to the langes messer techniques from the old European combat treaties.

I have been studying Hakko ryu Ju Jutsu for 25 years, since I was 5. It is a combination of Blocking, Fulcrum Throw, non-fulcrum Throw, Escaping, Striking, joint locks, pressure points. Everything a growing boy needs. And have been teaching for about 10. I was a small kid, and my mother wanted meto learn some self defense. I dont think she had any idea how much I would take to it, it is my way of life. I speant my developing years in the dojo, learning from a great teacher. Besides what my parents taught me it is what made me who I am today.
