I'm mostly a face latherer and use shave sticks. I re-apply soap using the shave stick before each pass. I don't really care how much lather my brush is capable of holding, honestly.
Also, I generally just do 2 passes these days. WTG and XTG. I skip the ATG because it just doesn't do much for me and is a waste of time.
There's no hard and fact rule for passes. 3 seems to be about the average, but some do 4 or more and some do less than 3.
Its all up to what works best for you, as has been mentioned YMMV.

It's all about "my lather is bigger than your lather" bragging rights. Someone posts "Yo! MY brushwork is so good I got enough lather for 3 passes!". So then someone else obviously has to brag about getting FOUR passes worth, then someone else comes back with how they make so much lather they THROW OUT enough for 3 more passes.
Then some poor newb comes along and looks at his little 2-pass lather and feels inadequate.
Just call me Chris.
I'm not as old , but this is big +1 for making the ladies happy
Oh yeah, If i didn't save my lather I'd be in the poor house! My brush lathers so well that it uses up half a puck of soap. Then I have to squeeze it out and use it over and over again and again and again and again... ... ... ... When yo Mama shaves she has to go back to reload after every Pass! If YMMV then you ain't doing sum'in right!
My 30mm silvertip holds enough lather for as many passes as I would ever care to have. I use VDH so I don't worry about wasting soap from a $1.87 puck.
My normal shave is a single pass but sometimes I go the whole enchilada 3 pass shave.

This talk about lack of rules and this "YMMV" freedom garbage is what is killed wet shaving in the first place! "YMMV" really stands for You Make Me Vomit. Bah, Humbug!
It's an inevitable cycle...first, the comeback, when a few brave, disciplined souls refine the forgotten techniques of our forefathers and tell a new audience how it's done.
Then, it takes off with the hoi polloi, and the next thing you know folks are talking about "do your own thing", how rules don't matter, and they turn on standards like the Veg and Williams.
Next thing you know people are getting bad results, and start talking about how wet shaving with traditional tools doesn't work, and you "always cut yourself". Then civilization crumbles and we gotta start all over.
Good prep. Sound technique. Three passes.
Now, you kids get off my lawn.

I spend my knights at the Veg Table.
I bowl lather with creams, so there is no issue. The issue is the mild depression while washing all that left over lather down the sink. There are no rules, but as either a face latherer or someone with low quantity lather syndrome you naturally have to expect a certain amount of derision from the rest of us more-than-enough lather people.
That's the beauty of it - there are no rules !!
With a Feather DE I need 4-5 passes to get DFS
With a R41 Grande I need 2-3 passes to get DFS
With a Feather Artist Club SS I need 1-2 passes to get DFS
With a Mühle Sophist Fusion I need 1 pass + TouchUp to get DFS
Rules? There are rules to this pass-time of ours? Oops, will i be forgiven for breaking most of them?
Do whatever is best for you and enjoy!
Laughter, love and shaving!
Here are the "rules". Not much has changed since 1905. (Well, the chapter on safety razors has been proved wrong, but it was early days then.)

I have my marvey mug, with 5 sticks of arko smushed into it, I load it 20 secs or so the first time, (face lathers by the way). In between passes I leave my kent bk4 smushed head first into the mug, so the bristle sit on the soap in the mug. Once done with a pass, I rinse off with hot water, (just a few splashes). I then take the handle of the brush and just kinda swirl it around the mug a few times. I do this each pass, and if I need to reload for the third pass, so be it, I re load like a champ too!! I usually end up looking like the Williams mug soap picture on the box, all over flowing with lather. It makes me happy. :)

I load for 5 passes, 2 1/2 - 3 for face, 2 for head.
I guess I feel for new guys trying to squeeze three passes, because of the "rule", out of a brush when they are first learning to lather soaps. Ouch
