Here is the HHT before the shave, both root out and root it. I put music over it because my son would not be quiet during the filming. Some HHT 5s in there

    Shave # 37
    Prep: Hot shower
    Soap: Tabac
    Strop: Kanayama 25/50
    HHT pre shave: 4-5
Shave: Great shave, smooth, sharp as ever, smooth as ever

I think Doc's facial hair is impregnated with CBN spray.

Nah, I have so much Mojo, I am actually honing the razor as I shave.

You've got me beat doc. Just had my first "need to touch up the razor" experience.

Six shaves if I counted right. Which may well be the longest I've gone on a razor without refinishing it.

Now maybe it's because I was drunk when I stropped, and MAYBE it's because the strop I chose while drunk has a vintage linen component with zero flex so it's abnormally easy to rough up an edge on it, and MAYBE it's because I half zoned out while stropping and probably did 50 passes on that linen when I usually stop around 20. We're not here to place blame... SERAPHIM... but shave was horrible, so I scoped it and big chunks were knocked out of the edge (looked like I had finished on a stone with a piece or two of low grit particles trapped in the slurry). It'd be good edge for a few mm, then massive hole (at 400x... small hole at 100x... no hole at 40x). Repeated a few times.

I actually was worried I'd have to drop back a stage on the stones, it looked so bad. I checked a few other razors around the same shave count and they all look good so I'm guessing I did something awful stropping without noticing it (hit the hardware or something perhaps).

I guess it would depend on many factors, such as the brand of the razor and the facial hair. I shave every other day or so and I can go for about 4-5 months w/o honing. I noticed that my shaves improved once I got the honing technique right.

Drunk stropping-thats a new one for me. Never shave drunk with a straight, body parts may end up missing-important ones even.

I keep the towel tight enough that anything dropped will fall straight down without encountering any vital obstructions.

Using suede in place of linen intrigues me... sadly it seems the only suede components I can find are on $175+ strops. It doesn't intrigue me anywhere near that much. It'd be cheaper to make my own drunk.

That's what I thought, and paid over $160 for the Kanayama 2196, and got linen and leather... I thought the back side of the leather component was the suede, and it seemed to work, but that wasn't it.

Aframestokyo has the Kanayama #3 which is suede and a thicker leather than the 2196... it is overall a much higher grade strop, yet it was only $106 plus shipping.... and then I got a $4.33 refund in my Paypal the other day so I suspect they have a B&B discount. See my other thread, but that pretty much covers it.

I don't know if they have a B&B discount but my first assumption on the refund would have been that you got overcharged due to a change in exchange rates (IE their site used an old rate, and when it got converted to Yen, they got more than the asking price, so they refunded the difference). I may be wrong though.

How much was shipping to US on it?

$105 is still a bit more than I'd like to pay (I have a Tony Miller, an Ambrose and a Vintage Cordovan already, so I don't really need another strop), but I'm definitely considering it.

edit: heck with it. I'll sell my Dubl Duck to fund it or something.

I am curious, what hoing method did you or are you using with the razor you got 6 shaves with? Which brand of stones for bevel setting and finishing? thanks, Alx

Collateral damage due to my bad juju. Sorry about that Slice!

Doc, it's not too late to repent. Repent and embrace the Films. The alternative will not be pretty....

I banged up the edge I think, wasn't the finishes fault, but I believe the finish on it was a Thuri. It's been in rotation with 3 other blades honed at the same time and they're all doing fine. It was also doing fine, then went from zero to crap in one shave.

Actually, I realized the problem. I must have been considering using films in the future and the molecules along the edge (those molecules are particularly fond of Mojo) rebelled and formed their own state, which sadly was not along the edge of the razor. They moved so quickly I didn't even see them.

Anyway, I used the blade to compare some oilstones, then thuri then my jnat and the results of HHT's weren't a surprise. (Always holding by root end). YL<Charn<Ark<Thuri<Jnat. So it's sitting on a Jnat finish now.

    Shave # 38
    Prep: Hot shower
    Soap: MWF
    Strop: Kanayama 25/50
    HHT pre shave: 4-5
Shave: Good shave, not as smooth as the rest, still sharp. Will have to see if it was the razor or the soap, the lather was a bit dry.

MWF lather will be drier than tabac. Don't lose faith. You're going for triple digits!
