Seems pretty cool and has a ton of power for the size but I'll probably wait for a couple iterations before buying one. Hopefully by then they'll open up the ability to upgrade ram and the ssd on our own.

Looks very cool but at $2100 way outta my price-range for want I want to spend on a laptop

Also read this headline on wired today:

Apple's new MBP dubbed "the least repairable laptop [ever]" by iFixit. It uses soldered RAM, a non-standard SSD, and a fused display unit. Say goodbye to cheap repairs/upgrades.

If you add on all of the editions (larger hard drive, more ram, etc.) it totals $9,000.

As I understand it, the high res of the retina display can only be used in certain programs, like games. It is not available during normal use. Also the soldered RAM and weird SSD make it nearly impossible to upgrade. Add that with the > $2k pricetag, I think I will pass.

That is why you have to upgrade it when you order it for a cool $7,000 extra.....then you are set!

    I would highly recommend this.
I bought my Macbook Pro on the first model and it is a pile compared to the next model that came out within a few months.
Apple is like that. They'll just upgrade the parts and if you buy too soon, you get a lesser computer for the same price.

This is incorrect. The display stays at the resolution you set it to, regardless of the application you are using. In the retina setting, any applications not yet supporting retina with hi res graphics will be scaled, and will obviously not look great. However the retina display is still set to retina, and available. This is the same as when the iPhone and iPad went to retina; there was a lag until all apps supported the screen. Obviously that gap has been crossed, as it will be with the new MacBook Pro.

The retina display on the MBP is amazing, but it is sure to be only the first in the wave to come. It's a trend all laptops will be following shortly, Apple just got there first.

Meh. I can imagine many different ways to spend more $2K than on a computer.

I think you answered your own question there... :) The MacBook Pro is as it says in the name, intended for professionals. Someone who needs that kind of power and display accuracy in addition to exceptional portability. It's far beyond the needs of your average computer user. But if you fit the intended audience, there's not much that can top it in the market right now. It's exceptional. I can edit video in FULL 1080p in the preview window while still having full access to timeline and controls! Astonishing.

Even so, I can't justify the purchase until my current portable is a little further on in age... :) ah well.

Why worry about the SSD size? You shouldn't be storing important data on your laptop anyways, it should all be on external drives or in the cloud.

It also gives them a reason to sell external thunderbolt hard drives.

I love Apple products, but do not understand this. They remove the SuperDrive, make it almost impossible to upgrade, remove FireWire, replacing it with ThunderBolt (I know no one who actually uses it), and slap on a massive price tag. I think they will lose many customers with this decision. I will not be upgrading any time soon.
