A quick question for those who have built a belt grinder, 2 x 72.
Would a Dayton, 2 hp, 1725 rpm 115/230v motor be suitable with step pulley's?
I ran across one at a rummage sale that is currently powering an old table saw.

Sounds prefect, and use the step pulleys.
I would say the horse power is great for a heavy duty belt grinder. I have a homemade buffer thats 1725rpm and I think its the perfect speed. The first thing I am doing when we move is making one of these, so if you could share your build with us it would be greatly appreciated.

Definitely, 2hp is even enough for knives. I am running a 3 phase 1hp with step pulleys ATM and it works perfect, I couldn't even slow it down.
Why not contact Grainger, the folks that market the Dayton motor in question? I have found that 3/4 hp 1725 rpm with a Viel 1x42 belt sander is more than enough (1/2 hp is normal). 2x72 with step pulleys is heavier. Grizzly's 2x72 belt sander for knives is 1 hp, without the step pulleys, and is probably underpowered to keep costs down.

Wales is not like Arkansas in any way (with apologies to John Cale).
