You can put a great edge on any soft steel, it just wont hold that edge very long. You can tell which ones to stay away from usually by the look of the blade. Tomahawks, timber ratlers, kreigers and more all have that stamped from sheet metal look to them and have that thin near wedge look. I have shaved with a tomahawk and it actually started decently but didn't hold. Out of cheap razors Gold Dollars have been the only ones that have held up there edge near to more expensive brands and have consistent steel when other decent cheapos can be hit and miss. It's always great to experiment, you never know what you may find!

The very first one I bought - without seeing all the posts on here - was a Gold Dollar. It was like winning the jackpot on a slot machine with your very first coin. Makes you want to keep trying even though your luck was used up with the first guess.

I don't know if I agree with this part. The two bum GDs I've had simply would not take an edge in the first place. Not that they honed up fine and then fell apart.

I'd be interested in hearing more about your findings.

The ability to put an edge on a Hershey bar is cool but a great diamond in the rough, like a GD, is relatively easy to make into a razor. It is much more of a find. If someone can jump through hoops, like with that last razor, and get a keen edge, it is nice but not very useful. I could easily recommend a GD to a novice honer... with a few tips, it could be made shave ready. None of these others (so far) could be recommended by me - they are too hard for the final result. Up to this point, the only cheapo razor out there worth the effort is the GD (IMHO).

I'm still looking for that next diamond.

Edit: BTW, any of these razors except the GDs are available for someone else to experiment with - if you think you have a plan to make them shave worthy, I'll send one to you and you can experiment. Just let us know your findings. Some of them are kinda fuggled but a lot of work has been done in prepping them so working on the edge would be the main task.

Doc226 just posted his first impressions of the Sweeney Todd razor. Looks like another knife blade - tough to make into a useful tool.
