Ogallala Bay Rum

I have recently got a sample bottle of Ogallala Bay Rum, I have never used anything with bay rum before so thought i would give it a try. But the first sniff Strong stuff

I keep sniffing the bottle and it's starting to grow on me now, I thought this will make an excellent cologne for winter . I got a sample bottle for £1.

Thinking about getting some clonk bay rum soap now

The Clonk Bay Rum Soap does not have that much of an aroma, at least that I can detect. I use Pinaud Virgin Island Bay Rum almost exclusivly and compared to that, the soap just does not have that much of an aroma. I want to try other bay rum formulations in the near future.

Shake the Ogallala well before dispensing into your hand. It has a higher moisturizing content than most other Bay Rums and separates like oil and water.

I like it. It's not an everyday thing for me. I use it as an intermediate step when the weather is turning dry, or when I have a mild sunburn, and I'm not QUITE wanting an aftershave balm, but I'm not wanting a higher alcohol content AS like the various Pinaud products.

It might smell strong in the bottle, but it doesn't have much in the way of longevity: so wear it without fear!!

I like the lime and peppercorn. I have never tried the Ogallala cedar and sage in a cologne or AS format. I did have it in a air freshener format. It smelled great, especially for that purpose. Predominately cedar as I recall, and nothing wrong with that.

(As an aside, I do not understand why Ogallala's air fresheners are not its biggest sellers, assuming they are not. There must be a hundred bay rums out there, and hundreds of shaving soaps and deodorants and other products of the types Ogallala sells. But not so many air fresheners that I would care to use. And I would think that most folks would have a need for air fresheners from time to time!)

I completely agree. Most Ogallala bay rums, to my nose anyway, get most of their scent from bay tree leaf oil, which in my experience has very little staying power no matter how power the juice is right off the bat and not matter how concentrated the scent is with that oil.

Ogallala's "Special Reserve Double Strength" bay rum cologne has big tenacity. But to my nose, even though I am sure that the bay oil content is higher than its other bay rum colognes and aftershaves, most of that increased tenacity comes from cinnamon/cassia and clove, not because the bay tree leaf oil content is higher.

Many bay rums are loaded with cinnamon/cassia and clove. It is a legit, traditional ingredient in bay rums going way back, along with some other non-bay tree oil ingredients. Thus, there is nothing inauthentic or misrepresented about having those components in a "bay rum." But for me personally, I would rather take the hit on tenacity and have a purer bay tree oil product.

John (I forget his last name) founded Ogallala bay rum, and as far as I know still runs it. He is a great and personable guy, a great vendor, and puts out excellent products.

After using the varieties in the Bonanza pack (a great buy by the way) over the last 6 months , I just ordered 8oz bottles of both the lime & peppercorn and sage & cedar. For straight bay rum, I'm sticking with Captain's Choice. The bay rum/sandalwood is also nice, but since I gave my son-in-law a bottle of it a few months back, I decided not to order one for myself.

I actually think t is a little weaker than some of my favorite bay rums, such as Dominica Bay Rum, and St. Charles Shave Bay Rum.

I received my second order from them a few days ago. I ordered from them directly. They had emailed me and said an emergency would cause a delay in my shipment but they would put in some extra goodies. Well it was like a major Christmas package when I opened the box they had put sooo many extras in for me. My first order was for the sampler. This time I ordered the blue bottles of Bay Rum and Sandalwood which I liked the best. I also got their Bay Rum extra strength, which it really is. When I use Ogallala, I really load it on myself, more than a splash. I have several Bay Rums: Masters, which to me is very barber shop, Pinaud VI, I like the bite, and I made the 50-50 Pinaud-Masters for when I don't want to be bitten too hard. Of course I have Captain's Choice which is a very nice stand alone Bay Rum I use when going out. I generally like Bay Rums in the summer, just feels right for the warmer weather. One of QCS's new ASB is a Bay Rum- Cayman, and I use that along with the regular Bay Rum AS.

I like Ogalla, Masters, and Pinaud, but my favorite is Captain's Choice. It is a little more expensive, but it has more staying power to me. It converted me to a Bay Rum lover.

Of those which I own I am having a hard time deciding which I like better; Ogallala Special Reserve, Captain's Choice, Dominica or St Lucia. They are each quite different, but I like each and every one of them. If I go by which one has gotten the most use that would be Dominica, followed by Captain's Choice, Ogallala and St Lucia. Dominica was my first love so I think I may be partial toward this one. St Lucia lacks the added spices and is essentially bay leaf oil and rum, but I think as The Knize has stated above what most of us associate with bay rums is those added spices such as cinnamon/cassia and clove. That is what I like about St Lucia, but I think the reason I reach for it the least is because its notes are so much weaker than those of spices found in most bay rums.

I'm a peasant - I add a couple of drops of Ogallala to y plain ol' cheap witch hazel, shake well and apply. Use it mainly as an undernote to Old Spice AS, and it's brought many an admiring comment.
Find the neat Ogallala just a wee bit too clove-y for my personal taste to use directly.

Thanks for the post. Good info for a guy new to bay rums. After a year of DE shaving I'm just now starting to try the rums. My first try is a bottle of A/S from a local apothecary in Cold Spring New York in the Hudson Valley. They make it themselves and don't label it as bay rum but it clearly is. Very expensive at $25 for a little bottle but is very nice. I'm ready to try more! I think I'll start with a bottle of regular Ogallala and a bottle of Captains Choice. I'll try the 'flavored' ones after. Thanks again.

My first try is a bottle of A/S from a local apothecary in Cold Spring New York in the Hudson Valley. They make it themselves and don't label it as bay rum but it clearly is. Very expensive at $25 for a little bottle but is very nice. I'm ready to try more! I think I'll start with a bottle of regular Ogallala and a bottle of Captains Choice. I used to use Superior 70 by the handful as an after shave/face toner, and in a way I think it smells best of all. But very little tenacity, which I liked so that I could wear any scent I wanted. I decided though that it might be making my face red--allergic reaction?--so I am using witch hazel and/or a 50% solution of alcohol. A mix of bay rum and witch hazel is classic, I am told.

Your own body chemistry says a great deal about how any fragrance will develop.

Never judge a cologne or aftershave by how it smells in the bottle.

Why do you think ladies put some on the inside of one wrist, rub their two wrists together, and then smell?

Now it's my turn to apologize for not coming back but I was waiting for the mail if you know what I mean. A bottle of Captains Choice and the Ogallala sample pack came today.

First impressions: Keep in mind I have not worn any of these on my skin. Tomorrow after my morning shave will be the first. This is all sniffed from the bottle (I know, I know).
Captains Choice - Deep rich scent with all sorts of goodies floating in the bottle. I think I'll like this a lot but could be a little too much clove for me, but then again, that's from the bottle.
Ogallala - While certainly different from Captains, appears to also have a rich and deep scent, more spice than the Captains. Again, maybe too much clove for me. After my bottle from Cold Spring Apothecary (which has no detectable clove) and sampling these two, I realize I like bay rum, not clovey bay rum. I think I like the cologne more than the A/S with the Ogallala.
I will try Dominica next on your recommendation. I think I'm looking for pure.

But the real surprise are the other samples in the Ogallala pack. I like them a lot, more than the regular A/S and Cologne. The limes and peppercorn is surprisingly fantastic. It's also surprising (to me) how well Sandalwood goes with BayRum. Didn't expect it. But the one I might like best is the Sage and Cedar. This will have a place in my cabinet. Again though, this is all from the bottle. The clove could very well fade well for me upon wearing leaving that beautiful Bay Rum. I have to also say that for the money you get a lot in the 5 bottles from Ogallala.

Well, there it is, this summer is going to be a Bay Rum summer I believe.
