Default I thought it was my honing but it was my technique

I had tried all sorts of vintage and modern straights and I had honed quite a few myself. But none gave me a decent shave. After sending some to a Honemeister and on their return found I still couldn't get a decent shave I thought that something must be wrong. I persevered and lately I managed a good shave. I then went back to the ones I had honed ans wow great shave!

After all, that I could manage to produce a decent edge - I just couldn't use it!

    Happier now ;-)

Thanks for the warning- I was just saying in another thread that I would try straights in a few months- I could see me doing the same thing as you!

It was a really strange 'learning Curve' - for months I just couldn't get anywhere near a decent shave, then over week or so, things just slowly started to change. I started taking more time over lathering up, really stretching my skin and using pre-shave oil etc.

This morning I forgot to use the pre-shave oil and achieved as close a shave, so I think that may have just been a crutch that I needed in the earlier days, I seem to be able to do without it.

I have around 50 vintage Safety Razors - but now, I'm starting to buy lots of vintage straights, strops, hones - When will it end????

What a very existential question. Answer: it doesn't.

Well, if that's the case I might as well keep buying stuff :-)

Hopefully we'll have shaving equipment 'on the other side'

Yes, cash in your life savings, charge everything to the hilt and celebrate Christmas a week early!

And if the end doesn't come, I can always put some on Ebay in January :-)

I watched a documentary about a religious cult a while ago and the leader stated that the world would end on a particular day. The TV cameras were camped outside the estate owned by said cult. The date came and went of course - I wonder how the cult leader explained this away :-)
