    Default Next step in DE

Got so many razors to try already but it looks like they are all mild and not adjustable. I was thinking on getting something different, like an old Gillette adjustable. I think it is a little too early for me to try any open comb razors.
    What would you gentlemen suggest?

My second DE razor was an OC Sheraton, don't be afraid to give one a shot.

I have recently started using a Gillette NEW open comb and like you came from mild closed comb razors, At first I thought I was going to peel myself as the razor looked a bit confronting but after using it for a few shaves I found it to be no more aggressive than an ej89 or tech razor however YMMV

I'm about a month and a half in and using an open comb. No worries, actually I think it's easier to find the proper blade angle with an open comb. I have a gillette red and black long comb. Love it!

It's never too early to try an open comb. They range for mild to aggressive.

What's your beard like? Was there any learning curve? I really want to try it, using a mild razor equals more passes, which in turn equals more irritation.

Agreed with the guys above! Open Comb's get a bad rap for being aggressive. I think they are "efficient". Try a Gillette New, Long Comb or Short Comb...you'll be glad you did.

Vintage Gillette, probably the New. For modern, the Merkur 1904 is mild (and milder than the New's). A Fatip would be another good first open comb.

If you do a B&B search for "open comb" you'll find a very systematic discussion of open combs (history, more vs. less aggressive, pro's vs. con's, etc.) from the year 2008 or so. Since my (very nice) EJ89 with even a new Feather blade doesn't do well with multi-day beard growth (even after using a beard trimmer to scale it down), I'm trying to decide between obtaining an OC or an adjustable. I can't justify spending much $, however.

If, as you stated, you want an adjustable, I recommend the Gillette Slim adjustable. Maybe start at the #5 setting and see how you do with it. You can take it from setting 1 to 9.

OC razors can vary quite a bit in being aggressive. If you want something adjustable and somewhat aggressive: Futur.

After reading much about the "adjustable" line, I am moving towards Fatboy and Super Adjustable with Slim being my third preference. I am expecting a Fatboy arrival tomorrow, still looking for Black Beauty in my birth year, 1972. I will see how that works out before trying to get a Slim.

With regard to DE razors, I started out with a Slim Adjustable. I'd had a three piece OC and two one piece TTOs given me from the start, and did not get along well with that Good Will (OC - bloody vampire). The (probably a 40s period super speed) second one disappeared, so when I was quitting electrics my second or third time, I ended up buying a new Slim. But by then, I'd been shaving for 11 years (2 years SE, a year electric, 6 years Injectors, 2 more years suffering with the electric shaver . . )

By 1969 or 1970, when I got my Super Adjustable, I was 4-5 years into DEs. Adjustable razors are very convenient, and the handle length really suits me better than the shorter Gillettes do (and why I had it in my mind that Fat Boy adjustables were both short and fat, I just don't know).

The Fatboy is a great razor as well. I know you'll like it, as I like mine. I mainly recommended the Slim because you can usually get them a bit cheaper.
