Default Do you rather make lather in a scuttle or a bowl of some sort?

Please answer if you own both... Some people have mentioned that the quality of the lather made in a scuttle is not as great as a bowl/mug... due to the heat in the scuttle, lather becomes foamy and loses its quality. That's the reason i'm asking the question.

I can make lather in either. Love my Robert Becker scuttle, though. Having all that hot lather available is just wonderful.

Needless to say, I use my scuttle all the time now.

Winter = scuttle and warm water shave

Summer = bowl and cold water shave

I have no trouble making a later in warm or cold water or bowl or scuttle

I have the dirty bird "original" scuttle. Sometimes I use it as intended with hot lather, sometimes as a plain shaving bowl, and sometimes as a brush scuttle if I choose to face lather. You can still make a great lather with the hot scuttle, but it generally takes a more product and more water. I begin to mix the lather with a lot more water in my brush.

After playing with it all, I am almost exclusivly face lathering now. It is faster and works better. Sorry.

I use both bowl and scuttle and get no difference in the quality of the lather - which I use depends on my mood and sometimes the time as well as it takes a little more time to use a scuttle.

I don't use a scuttle but instead have a couple different bowls I use on a regular basis. They all fit in the palm of my hand, and range from 75 cents to $20. The key for me is just something wide enough to mix my cream/soap without the handle of my brush clanking off the sides.

The simple answer is no, the heat in the scuttle will not degrade the lather. The exception to that is if the water in the scuttle is too hot (you don't want to fill it with boiling water). Even when face lathering I use a brush scuttle except in the dog-days of summer.

My traditional shaving mug works like a charm for me.

Funny you should ask. I just received my first scuttle three days ago --used it the day it arrived. I was looking for hot/warm lather during my shave, and it delivered. Robert Becker was great to purchase from and I'm pleased w/ the appearance of the scuttle. The Proraso new formula lathered up fine for me using badger brush.

Am a face latherer, but like a smaller scuttle for keeping the brush warm.

I use my Dirty Bird most of the time, but if I'm in a hurry I'll use a bowl.

I'm thinking of trying Julie's Baby Bird though.

i wish i had a scuttle with a significantly larger bowl portion. i love my DB, but i really miss having a ton of room to work in. using the DB scuttle makes it hard to pick up and re-incorporate all the lather that builds up on the lip of it, whereas when i was using a larger bowl i could easily consolidate and mix up all the lather i'd produced so far. i'm gonna keep my DB for now and just keep dealing with its slight inconvenience, but if i come up with a great way to keep a larger bowl warm for several minutes, i may sell it and make the switch.
