I think the perception that pipe smoking is a masculine thing comes from the fact that we almost always only see men doing it, so it's a vicious cycle, as long as women don't see other women smoking a pipe then it will always be thought of as strange for a women to smoke a pipe, I would love to see more women smoking pipe, I find it very attractive, cigarettes on the other hand I disprize.

I have only seen two men smoke a pipe in my entire life (that I can recall). My grandfather and the French teacher at my high school. That said, I believe pipe smoking is definitely a more private pastime than cigarette smoking and therefore you will seldom see pipe smokers in action in public. For all we know there may be an entire society of female pipe smokers out there. I barely found out about wet shaving last year so the thought of this secret society existing is quite plausible in my eyes.
On a side note, I HAVE seen many many young ladies (very beautiful ones too) smoking their hearts out at hookah lounges. I had 1 hookah in college and it saw about 4 times more females than males...and I was in a fraternity.
