Default What is the closest pure badger brush to a semogue 830 boar?

Does anybody have any insight on this. I like stiff brushes with smoothness and backbone. I love the 830 but would like a Semogue or even an Omega pure badger equivalent.
Rack your brains on this one gents and get back to me!

    Thanks, A.

Why?... (Well... Don't suppose it needs to be answered, but someone has to ask... ), if the 830 works so well, why had a clone of it in a different form...

I think none. A badger with backbone needs to have a very low loft, be very dense, or both. There are brushes that work equally well, but won't feel like a boar, IMO. 2 band badger is more scritchy, from what I have read.

Hopefully some brush gurus will chime in.

First, I am not sure Semogue or Omega make a pure badger brush, second, I am not aware of any pure badger brush that will be anywhere close in softness as your 830. I have a 1305 (same hair as 830) and two other boars, one Semogue 1470 and the other Omega 10275 and all three of my boar brushes are softer than any pure badger I have tried. It's just the nature of the (pure badger) beast. It's prickly. Boars are soft at tips. If you want a badger brush with good backbone and soft tips, try a two band (or finest) badger. I have a brush with a TGN finest and that is pretty good in backbone department. Still boars and badgers are different. Can't really compare them or try to match a boar brush to badger brush in attributes. I love badger brushes, and I love boar brushes. both for different reasons. Just remember, pure badger hair is prickly (mostly) and Semogue and Omega boars are soft.

Maybe a Vie-Long horse brush is what you need to try.
-= Boris =- The man thinks, the horse thinks, the badger thinks, the boar thinks. The fish doesn't think, the fish is mute, expressionless. The fish doesn't think because the fish knows everything.

I see. Thanks for that. I thought pure badger, being more expensive, would be softer than bristle! You learn every day!

I have a VDH Pure Badger (cheapie) and a couple of Boars that are cheap but they are all cheap and work very well. Both the boars I believe have softer tips to me, not by a ton, but a noticeably softer feel to the tips. The Pure DOES pick up soap a lot better than any better badger grade I've tried, but Boars still run king in that aspect and I try to use the Badger with creams and use the Boar to pick up the soap.

I have never tried the 830, nor have I tried an Omega or Semogue badger, but I think you have to look at the differences between Boar and Badger first. Then you might want to look at all the grades, especially if scritch is an issue then a higher badger grade will help.

One thing about Badger....MUCH less break-in time. For you, probably no biggie, but for a new DE shaver, they can get frustrated with the Boar and give up or write it off, so badger, even a low-grade, is usually safer for a new wet shaver.
