Hello. I'm in my late sixties and have been using Proraso in a can for years. I just recently got a boar hair brush and started using Proraso shaving soap for sensitive skin. Great stuff. Now I've come into a 195i Gillette Aristocrat, which I've started shaving with. So far I haven't cut myself. I have a light beard, but I can start to look a little scruffy after a day or two. I could certainly get away with using a cartridge razor, but I've already noticed better skin tone, To tell you the truth, the best thing abut the DE razor is the nostalgia trip. Anyway, praise the Internet for catring to such interests and obsessions.

Welcome to B&B! If you really want some nostalgia come and check us out in the straight razor forums...

Out of curiosity, do today's DE blades feel any different than what you had used in your days before the cartridge? Was going to the cart seem like manna from heaven, or was it just the thing to do?

Welcome back then. I have a few vintage Gillettes, but I'm most fond of my 1961 FatBoy. I too came back to "traditional" shaving after many years of using cartridge razors and more more of using electrics. It would be hard to go back to them. Shaving with DE's and the new shaving products that are coming out provides so much more interest and variety.

Using DE blades seems vaguely familiar. When cartridge blades came in, they seemed like a great advance. The advertizing really pushed the multi-blade thing. One good reason for going back to DE is cost, eh?

Don't believe the cost factor unless you're a frugal, minimalist sort. The blades are cheaper, yes, but many people here have DE razor rotations and product rotations that boggle the mind and alarm squeamish accountants and wives. I have six razors, and many different products. My wife finally allocated a piece of our budgetary pie to my monthly shaving costs! Aww, but it's a lot more fun than shaving the other way... and it is much cheaper than buying a new fishing boat (but this was a good threat that got me that little piece of the pie!). Like I said, I really like the variety of this type of shaving. Every day is different, and it's something I look forward to rather than a daily chore like it used to be.

I'm in my 60s also, and finally returned to the brush and blade. It has been a thoroughgoing and unexpected pleasure.

    Welcome and enjoy!
