Default The Haberdashery of the 22nd century

I've just finished watching the new Sherlock Holmes movie and was struck by how inherently stylish and significant even the meanest soul in the film looked. Then I got to wondering, if the trend continues, extrapolating from 1897 to 2107, what on earth will we be wearing? I assume that, given the fact that a sports jacket and jeans is now considered de rigeur by most people for all but the most formal ocassion/business (and even then this is going too far for many people) combat trousers and a polo shirt or even baseball shorts and a t-shirt will be "dressing up" by then.
    Any thoughts?

Um ... there are places in the world where that is the prevailing view. They are routinely denounced by Amnesty International.
Be there or be square. Only I can do both!
I've got a cat named Beefeater and a dog named Beefeater, and two goldfish called Beefeater and Beefeater. There's Beefeater my hamster and Beefeater my horse, and my piglet, known as Beefeater of course.

It's hard to say what we will be wearing one hundred years from now. The only thing I know for sure is that it will be whatever our computer overlords allow us to have.

IIRC the Sean Connery film is called Zardoz, the only reason I can remember it is an oblique reference to it in Phoenix Nights between Paddy and Max.

Thanks...Zardoz..Great flying head! The most embarrassing movie he and others ever made! On his headstone they should place
"I did not star in Zardoz"

I assume the t-shirt will be the std body garment and what we think of as tracksuit trousers will be the std bottoms, most probably made from a fabric sourced from kelp or mushrooms or the like- I expect it to be very breathable and take a 3 minute superwash in the new machines we will have which will be more like a conveyor-belt diswahser than the washing machines we know now and to dry in 15 mins, or under 2 in an air curtain. People wearing "traditional" Adidas Samba and Air Jordans will be seen as having impeccable taste.
    But
I believe there will be a major societal fragmentation with the very wealthy continuing to wear woollen and linen clothes in an interpretation of the tracksuit, which will be the new version of the business suit, but with small lapels and a very fitted look which most will be able to pull off due to very strict diet. Not sure about buttons. They might be out.

I can buy the idiocracy concept pretty easily. Mike Judge might have hit the nail on the head with that one.

With a Billion Indians all anxious to go to University if humanly possible, increasing number of Chinese graduates desperate to get to the West for post-grad work and Africa not even awake yet, I don't think the planet will have to worry about it.

No matter what the style will be in that time, there will still be some holdouts who are shaving with DE or straight razors, wearing tweed and enjoying the finer things of a life gone by.

An important aspect of clothes is pockets - I need places to carry stuff. This probably won't change even when we all have chips implanted at birth that can access google, facebook and our bank accounts (and B&B of course!) automatically. So I'm guessing that there will still be clothes if only to provide pockets. Beyond that who knows? It's hard to imagine that no one will want the luxury of leather shoes or a fine wool suit or silk shirt or a nice mechanical watch but maybe not.

Only 2% of watches made last year were mechanical anyway.
Natural materials doesn't necessarily mean traditional style- plenty of leather training shoes out there and even silk hair conditioner. I do agree wool is pretty hard to beat for many applications.

... the Planet, no. The "West" ... yes.

Only to some degree. You can only go back "so far" and after that what you wear is nothing more than "costume". You want to dress like Franklin Denano Roosevelt? Cool. You want to dress like Benjamin Franklin? ... it better be 31st October when you fly that kite.

    No change there.

The wealthy have always found ways to demonstrate their wealth through their clothes. One may think that things got a little more egalitarian in the 20th century, but with the possible exception of China and the Mao Suit, it's more a question of things becoming more nuanced and detail-driven.
