I wonder if the wife would mind me getting something like this for my briar, the burnt out corn cob, and the pouches of Captain Black and Carter Hall? It's like getting the baby's room set up before he's born! :)

Thanks! And yes, they are loaded, even more so now. These pics are from last fall.

It's a classic that just screams "class"

I've not bought any furniture yet, but I am negotiating with a mate's misses to make me a humidor-come-smoking cabinet. The problem is that every we start talking and drawing it gets bigger. Presently the design is about 60cm x 80cm x 40cm but if we keep going I'm sure it will be the size of Mr Allen's cabinet in no time.

Heh, heh, I have high hopes of getting my hands on an estate Stanwell this week (the seller wants too much money, but I can pick it up and save the postage which makes it a reasonable deal*)

Keeping it alight it a skill that needs to be learnt by experience, I'm afraid. For me the key was packing and drying. Got those two right and the rest fell into place. My other tips is not to "chase" the smoke by puffing too fast and hard. It's as bad as bloody martial arts breathing exercises trying to do the opposite of what you want to!

    * This kind of thinking is a danger sign!

Ahh, didn't know that. Kildare 999 looks pretty spiffy... Thoughts?

Anywhere local you know of (I'm planning an attack on sol levy and bogarts) I can go to check out the gear in the flesh?
It's cheaper to order online and get slugged with duty than to pay that duty PLUS retail.

The 999 looks good to me. The only negative about my 80S is that it doesn't sit in a pipe rest very well because of the shape. The 999 has a similar shape without the difficulty.

Indeed, I couldn't get the bowl to stay lit until I learned that. The first light is to char the tobacco so it curls up a bit and moves around a bit. Then tamp it back down lightly and light again.

It also depends on how you pack the bowl. I use three layers; one third lightly packed (just so it doesn't fall out), the second third slightly tighter (but not tight) and on the last third I try to pack more tobacco in the bowl than possible (a bit tighter again). My methods aren't perfect but they get me a consistently good burn.

Now if I could borrow a meme from alex2363...
