Default New pipe smoker inside !

    Hi all,

After 20 years smoking cigarets, I decide to try a pipe and I have to say it's a new world that's opening to me, full of flavor, sensations, pleasure !
At the moment I have only a briar pipe but some friends will arrive soon.

Before starting the pipe, I smoke 15/20 cigs a day, now perhaps one or two and without pleasure, just reflex.

I have some of interogations, for exemple can I light a pipe, smoke 15 minutes then let it shut down and restart with the rest of tobacco a couple of hours later ?
I've read that pipes need to be broke ( sorry for brushes language), when did you know a pipe is ? flavour change or ?

I bought a pack of pipe cleaner and a tool, have to say that I'm very statisfied with my sensations, no pipe juice, good feeling with tobacco, not too hard, can be smoke an hour long without bad taste in mouth, sometimes my pipe become too hot but now I know how it works pretty good so I can smoke a all pipe without light again and again.

thanks to help me discover this new world of pleasure

    all the best

I'd shy off smoking a pipe 15-20 minutes and restarting it a few hours later. You can just pack a half bowl though, nothing at all wrong with that.

A broke in pipe is one that gets the cake of prior smokes built up on the walls. You will know this when the walls aren't smooth when you run your finger inside. It will get thicker and thicker over time and ultimately will need reamed. A reamer is a inexpensive tool that you stick inside of pipes and rotate to slowly trim off the cake wall. You take off just enough to leave a cake in the pipe. If any of your pipes have a black wall inside then they are carbonized which is a manmade way of breaking in a pipe when it is made. If it is bare briar wood then putting a thin wall of honey (yup honey) and the first few bowls you smoke will carbonize and build up that wall of cake you want.

Welcome to pipe smoking chrisss. The best thing about it is you can smoke a pipe any way you like. I have no problem smoking a bowl off and on throughout the day and I wouldn't worry about doing so. Building cake will take care of itself just by smoking the pipe. The main thing to focus on is proper packing, lighting, and puffing. Once you figure those out things get a lot easier. There are many preferences and variables in pipe smoking and no one does exactly the same thing, you just have to find what works for you. The main thing is that you're enjoying it, don't worry too much about the details.

That's interesting to know about smoking a single bowl on and off Jason. Good advice!

Ugh... I've been looking at pipes for a month or so now, and SWMBO is not happy about it. Yet I keep wandering over to the Brown Leaf and torturing myself...

I agree with this. At work, I put a cork in the bowl if I still have tobacco in the bowl. This extinguishes the fire quickly so I don't leave a smoke trail on the way back to my desk.

You can most certainly smoke part of a bowl and come back to it later in the day. It is called the Delayed Gratification Technique. I will sometimes let a half smoked bowl set for a day or two before I come back to it.
Also, pipes do need to be broken in. My technique that has worked for me for the past 42 years is to fill the bowl and smoke the pipe exactly as I would normally smoke it. I just never bothered with all of the hoops that others jump through when breaking in a pipe.

I am not supposed to be smoking anything at all, but I have recently come back to my pipe and I smoke a bowl or two a day now and everything seems to be doing ok with that.

    Hey

first bowl with a BC calabash, briar wood.
I have to say that i love the pipe, beautifull item but this first use was strange, my tobacco (the only one I have for the moment) did not have the same taste as it usually have and I keep a bad taste in mouth a long time after finnishing pipe.
Hope it will be better next time !
does all pipes need to be broken or there are some specials kinds that does not ?

Even pre-carbonated bowls have to be broken in. It is not unusual for a pipe to taste a bit off for the first 20-30 smokes. It should be fine after that. Just be careful to break it in slowly and not let the pipe get too hot.
You are what you is, and that's all it is.
