Weird, but funny. "Wilson light bulbs" is one of the best:

This is new to me. Is it a TV show in the US or just on the internet?

It's a half-hour comedy sketch show on IFC (Independent Film Channel). You can watch the sketches on Youtube, purchase the first two seasons on iTunes Store.

I watched it on Netflix, also - but I wouldn't know if it's available via AUS Netflix.

...I find it hilarious. When the "Hipsters" first came around, they annoyed me to no end, mainly due to the fact that they were doing what they thought was "cool", and it was things that I have been doing nearly all my life. Now all of a sudden, because I smoke a pipe, and like vintage vinyl records, and have dark rimmed glasses, and enjoy wearing cardigans, and etc, I am hipster-esque...

The show is funny, but I stopped watching it because every time I watch it, I just want to slap a hipster.

I like "Portlandia" too, and after reading interviews with Fred and Carrie, it's interesting to note what they're doing: making fun of their own subculture. I think one of the reasons that the show isn't more popular is that hipsters can't imagine that anyone would make fun of their vintage clothing, fair-trade coffee, and Instagram photos. They'd much rather see Sasha Baron Cohen make jackasses out of rednecks than see their own culture parodied, even in a fairly gentle and affectionate way.

I was talking with my friend and we pretty much agreed. The reason the show isn't as popular is that hipsters don't see it as funny due to it's accuracy, and regular folks are repelled by the hipsters weirdness. Austin is a pretty close second to Portland, as far as hipsters go, and there were parts that I really didn't laugh at because I see it every day. I KNOW those bookstore women, etc.

When I was touring, I heard a funny legend about Eddie Van Halen. Rumor has is that when one of his buddies showed him This is Spinal Tap in the early 80s, Eddie didn't laugh at all. He couldn't tell if it was supposed to be a serious documentary or not. That's almost how I felt about Portlandia.

Yeah, but spelling it phonetically like that gives it more comedic oomph!

ok - I have watched the first two episodes on Netflix and they leave me with some quesitions ...

Are there really people like this? I am so sheltered

How much of this is exaggeration for the sake of hummor?

    Is this a regional phenomenon?

    I must know more.
