I am a newbie too but another victim of Proraso leaving heavy scum on my razor. I just cleaned 2 months worth of it off my Merkur with some Bon Ami powder. Both Cella and Proraso leave a white residue that hardens and is not washed away easily. Bon Ami and an old toothbrush did a wonderful job in 5 minutes. I enjoy Italian creams and the whole wet shaving experience so I am not complaining yet.

I have yet to have a problem wiping it off, Rinse the razor under hot water with the doors open in your using a TTO, then dry/buff on a terry cloth hand towel works fine except under the head. Then Q-Tip/toothbrush time. Hope this helps. BTW I also have very hard water.

Two months is too long. I usually clean the soap scum off my razor every two weeks or so. Much easier to manage. And if you think about it or have the time, a wipe down with a cloth right after shaving gets most of it (w/o the blade in, of course).

Gents, a little bit of history. Proraso is an Italian brand available on the market since the 1930's and is produced by the Ludovico Martelli Srl. This company was founded in 1908 in Florence and currently is the manufacturer of Proraso/C.O. Bigelow/Omega and the famous SMN shaving cream. In 2012 all their lines (including the new ones) were reformulated to a paraben-free formula.

Yes. I have no problems with Proraso at home, but I recently stayed down in Poole and everything got covered in a scummy film which was a bugger to clean off. The only thing different was the water.

Marco, what's your take on the difference between the new green Proraso and the Santa Maria Novella cream ?
i think SMN has lanolin, which gives it a better glide - but other than that, they are close, very close ......

I use Nevr Dull every week or so on my straights and find that it helps to remove any build-up that has accumulated

My opinion is that SMN is an "upgraded" version of Proraso Green, both old and new. The lather I get from SMN is a bit creamier and, as you properly say, the added lanolin gives slightly better glide. But yes, they are quite close in performance.
