    Default Trumper soaps

What do people think of Geo F Trumper hard shaving soaps? How do they compare to DR Harris soaps?

I ask, because I'm visiting London next week and haven't decided what, if anything, to buy in the way of shaving products - and the two shops are very close to each other. I already use Harris soap, so that's a known reference point, so if anyone can compare, that would be very useful.

    Thanks in advance.

A trip to London sounds like a great way to stock up.

Check out this thread from lower on this page... it may have some helpful answers to your questions above.

As for me, DR Harris is wonderful, but I can't compare it to GFT for you. Sorry!

Great, thanks. I looked over the board before I posted but didn't see that - my eyes are fading in my old age!

No worries! I had figured the "GFT" title (vs Trumpers) of that other thread could have thrown you off as well.
In all honesty, try something from DR Harris, you won't regret it.

GFT violet is one of my favorite, Harris soaps also top notch.

DR Harris is one of my favorites (prefer Arlington, patiently waiting on Windsor). I have experience only with two current formulation pucks from Trumpers, and I was hugely disappointed in both. The scent is fine, the lather...not so much. IMO, the Harris soaps are vastly superior.

Alan, I personally would pass on the Trumper's soaps. The only scent I have had decent lather from is the rose, but that is from two, 2008 pucks in wooden bowls. As the other thread reveals, quality is hit and miss I'm afraid. D.R. Harris on the other hand is a completely different story. You can buy with confidence any of the 4 tallow soaps-Arlington, Marlborough, Lavender and Almond. Performance is top notch. Avoid the Naturals soap though!
You could consider going to Jermyn Street also. Here you will find Floris(No.89 and JF are my favourites) and Czech & Speake(Oxford & Cambridge) at No.89 and No.88 respectively. Both brands are fairly expensive so be warned!

Thanks folks. Having seen your replies and read the other thread, it sounds like I'll probably give Trumpers soap a miss. But I'll probably pop in and get some Lime AS, which I really like.

I won't get a DRH soap next week - I've got an Arlington now and I'm waiting until the Windsor is ready, but I do intend to get a bottle of Windsor AS

I'll probably get the tube to Picadilly Circus and walk the length of Jermyn Street, but Floris and Czech & Speake are definitely a bit outside of my price range right now

Agree. Trumper's pre-2011 reformulation of rose is nice, but still not as nice as Harris. Just wish Harris made a rose, but then everybody does!

I don't have any issues with my GFT Limes soap, it lathers well and I like the scent, not too strong, but quite fresh. I may have got lucky having read a lot of negative comments about their soaps - whether the fact that I bought it from their shop makes a difference I don't know. I will soon finish the puck that I am on and start using the refill and I will be interested to see whether there is any difference in the performance.

Is this the soap that has one formula for bowls and one for the refills?

I like the performance of the three GFT soaps I own. The scents are top notch as well. Violets, Rose, and Coconut Oil. I suppose I would rate several soaps higher, but they are enjoyable and worth keeping in the den awaiting their exclusive use to the end.

I assume you're looking for soaps. NOnetheless thought I would mention that I was in Trumpers a few weeks ago and picked up a Spanish Leather cream. Just used it yesterday and loved it. Fantastic smell and gobs of really good quality lather almost instantly and effortlessly.

Don't forget that TOBS is also on Jermyn Street. Their Sandalwood Soap is non-tallow, but it performs really well.

Fortnums also have a moderate selection of shave gear from various brands all one place. When I was there a few weeks back they had Lucky Tiger Aftershave, which I have never seen anywhere else in the UK.

Yeah, I spotted them when I took a Google Streetview stroll along Jermyn Street last night. I think I'd be more tempted to try the Avocado cream, which I keep hearing good things about it. But with TOBS, I can get a reasonable selection of their stuff fairly locally (in Manchester), so I might save my budget for the others. (I know I can get them all online, but I really like to support actual shops where they exist - and the two I know in Manchester deserve support).

Ooh, I hadn't thought of that - great idea, thanks

If you are thinking of visiting Trumpers go ahead and schedule a shave. Trust me it will be one of the best things you have
    experienced.
I love trumpers soaps especially coconut, rose, and sandalwood. Have not tried Harris soaps in some time but when I had a puck of arlington about 5 years ago , I preferred Trumpers sandalwood

Can't comment on DR Harris but I have Trumper's Officers and gentlemen shaving soap and really like it. You do have to use a fair bit of product but it gives a good lather. Its unscented but has a nice soap smell to it if that makes sense. Leaves my skin clean and moisturised. As ever YMMV but I think its worth a try.

    D R Harris > Geo F Trumper, IMHO.

A Trumper soap would make a good souvenir, however and you would be able to make your own comparison.
