I am not all that well-versed with musk scents. Certainly at the high-end, Musc Ravageur by Editions de Parfums Frederic Malle and Muscs Koublaï Khän
by Serge Lutens Les Salons du Palais Royal Shiseido leap to mind. Both both of these, to me, are very complex scents, and frankly very difficult scents--I am not sure I like Musc Ravageur, but I get why folks do; Muscs Koublaï Khän is wonderful and profound to me, but I see why some folks think they would never wear it.
In the world of less expensive aftershaves and scents, I tend to think of "musk" added to the name of a fragrance as its maker's signaling that the scent is going to be darker, more woody perhaps, more leathery perhaps, than say a lighter aquatic, green, lavender, citrus, "fresh," sport, etc. scent. Musk often seems to be tacked onto the name of an exsiting scent, indicating, I suppose, that it is a "musk" version (a "flanker") of the original scent. There are lots of such scents out there.
So, no dis to AV--I have always liked the way AV smells, a true classic, I am guessing in all of its several forms (I especially like the Canadian Green version, which may be labled "Sport," I do not recall) that is very popular for a reason! But my sense and recollection is that AV Musk is not truly very musky as that scent accord would be defined, and I am not sure about the musk accord anyway.
Jovan Musk is a classic, less expensive musk with no small amount of staying power. Some seem to think it has real power and projection. Others not. I remember it as being fairly strong. 80s powerhouse scent of a type, I am thinking. If you wanted to explore whether musk is really the accord you are after, this one might be a place to start. Kiehl's Musk is said to be similar.
I am also guessing that scents with some "barbershop" to them might be pleasing to you. Pinaud Musk, which is sold as an after shave, but I would say is a full cologne stength, might be one to try.
Hope that helps.
