Default My Problem With the Edwin Jagger DE89

Hello all, just wanted to post as the title says, my problem with the Edwin Jagger DE89. It gets high praise here, but not so much in my book. It may be a great razor, but it is a source of razor bumps in my book. Yes I have tried everything from beard mapping to urberlather, to different blades, and I want to like it, I just don't. It does great with a sharp blade when removing light beard growth, but boggs down on 3 days or more growth and always gives me razor bumps. On the same note this never happens with my open combs, namely my Gillette New or 2010 Muhle R41. They are fantastic at obliterating heavy stubble.

Anyway, your thoughts are welcome on this, let me know if I'm alone in this one
I could probably load Tabac on a Q-tip and still get a decent lather

No issues here, I've mowed down a week's growth with one pass.

My EJ89 is my measuring tool. I know i'll get the best shave with it, but like trying other razors. I have yet to try an open comb. Will put that on my list.

btw, i was getting really bad razor burn and bumps on my neck when i started shaving. 4 weeks in, i've got my technique down. Sharp blade and let the weight of the razor do the work. I never listened when others told me that because unless i'd apply pressure, it was tugging and skipping and it hurt. But that's okay, because when i let that happen, my razor burn ended. so, to avoid the hurtful tugging and skipping, i just use a sharper blade.

Go with the razor that works for you. You may want to hang on to the DE89 for a while, however. Preferences have a way of changing with time.

I love mine, but have found that it performs at it's best with a thinner lather. When I use mine I always bowl lather a cream to thin out the mix. The DE89 does clog more easily than most of my rotation, but I get great results with it.
The higher the blade count, the worse the shave....

I'm with you 100% brother....thats why I started the Brotherhood of the Open Comb....Once I tried OC razors, there was no other choice. The DE89 gets praised as a milder razor, great for newbies, but the 2010 R41 or Merkur 41C 1904 OC (same heads) is as mild as the DE89 and just more efficient without any irritation.

My biggest issue was I needed to do at least 2 more passes with the DE89 than I do with my OC....My primary razors are my 2011 R41, the Fatip, The Gillette NEW SC and LC and the Old Type....I also do try to work in the 2010 R41.

Sounds like you need to join the BOTOC!!

A week, wow! I can't touch mine with the Jagger after 3 days. I guess we have different beards/skin types.

That's funny, the open combs are my favorite, including the Gillette old and new types. I have yet to try a Fatip but I hear the heads are the same as the R41 also. Every time I post I'm not a big fan of it, everyone tells me how to shave. I have hung onto it for long enough, revisiting it all the time. All I know is I got a very pleasing BBS shave with no irritation and no sting from my AS with my R41, and when I revisit the EJ DE89 the bumps come back. It was my first razor, and the one I have spent most of my time shaving with, yet my least favorite. I can get a BBS with it no problem, but it tends to be finicky. Not so with the open combs IMHO. Thanks!

So, use it to remove light beard growth. The advice to hang on to it is worthwhile. You may not always wait 3 days to shave. Why would anyone wait that long anyway unless testing a la Mantic 59 or the other guy at Shave Nation?

If you really must know my beard is thick and grows slow so I don't really need a clean shave until a couple of days later. I work in construction so a cleanly shaven face is nice but not mandatory. I prefer the R41 thanks.

It's funny how my posts of not liking the DE89 always bring about mild forms of hostility and denial . Quite a following on here. That is why we all here like the phraise YMMV!

I have a thick beard, but I shave twice per day. If I try to plow through more than 24 hours worth of stubble I need a very sharp blade and an aggressive razor, such as the R41. But since I am a shaving addict, I much prefer using a mild razor.

I say use what works for you brother...if after two days only the open combs work, stick with them and sell off the EJ.

I don't like it either. I didn't get razor bumps but I always got tiny red spots on my cheeks, no matter how smooth the shave seemed.
For a mild razor, I think both the Tech and the Superspeed are better choices.

the 89 series razors are part of my patented two razor technique that allow me to achieve perfect, no irritation or weeper BBS 99% of the time I shave. Thats an average that is not often achieved by the fad razors. If you are getting irritated with the 89 series, yet not with an open comb, you need to examine technique since an OC requires a different skill set. YMMV

    Wildalaska,
Do you have a post somewhere I could read about your two razor technique? Please attach link.

I have a EJ DE83 (slightly different head) and haven't had a problem shaving with it.
Every other day, every 3 days, every week, doesn't matter.

How many different types of blades have you tried in your 89?

i just got some bumps on my neck from my de89....i blame it on my ATG from last shave.

will see if this continues going forward.

i ordered some bump stopper too.

Maybe you should purchase another EJ89, So you can Compare it with yours, Maybe your Might be off and not shave properly, Maybe its a Factory Defect and you cant Notice it, For me the EJ89 works best with 2-3 days Stubble and Ive even gone a week without shaving and still no problems,

I would Really Suggest you get another EJ89 or borrow one so you can compare and see if maybe yours has some kind of Defect and isn't shaving properly, It does happen :o/
    Im just having fun :o)

It was my first DE, and it clearly is not the best for me. It was better with shims, but now I have a Fatip, this baby is the ticket for me. I'll go back and re-try the Jagger one day. YMMV
