Yes, high alcohol content burns. I use the level of burn to judge my technique. I know that I have done well when there is no stubble and little or occationally no burn. My technique needs improvement if my entire cheek and neck feels on fire.

The burn means, unfortunately that we should all work on our blade pressure. I love clubman products.

pour some in your wet hands and rub them together, then apply to your face, it cuts down on the burn
Ok, I switch between Pinaud Bay Rum and Ogallala Sandalwood Bay Rum. Love the burn of the Pinaud, but love the moisturizing of Ogallala. Is it just me, or does anyone else out there NOT get any burn from the Ogallala? There is no burn whatsoever! Maybe I got a dud bottle?

Ditto here.
I shake well (I do that with all of my non-balm aftershaves) and slop it on generously.
In order of burn... Pinaud VIBR, Lilac Veg, Special Reserve (seeing a pattern here), Captain's Choice, Floid Blue, and Ogallala.
Supposedly the "extra strength" Ogallala burns like the dickens.
I reserve Ogallala for when the weather is a touch dry, but my skin isn't yet screaming for a balm.

I agree...I picked up a bottle while on temporary duty in Georgia at a Walgreens for $3.99, and boy was it burning when i put it on!! Long live Pinaud Virgin Island Bay Rum!!

I have a funny story about Clubman Bay Rum.....
So, my ex-girlfriend had a really bad sun burn on her back. In a few days her skin started peeling (all the dead skin was coming off). She asked me to help her get it off, so I came up with the idea to use a razor (cartridge of hers) and it worked beautifully at removing the excessive flaky skin. Well, I also suggested using some aftershave to help out....though not the reason we're apart now, she never trusted me when I had a razor in hand again. That's how you strike fear into people when holding a razor!
To me, the burn is all about the level of alcohol, menthol and maybe cloves or pepper in the mix.
Want burn? Or a base-line for comparison? 70% Isopropyl. (Watch your eyes).
Pineaud products (all that I've tried) have a most satisfying zing to them.
Happy Wet Shaver
