So I got there and went to the cabinet. At this particular place they keep all the shaving related items in one place. I go there often and I know where everything sits Makes it easier to spot the new things when they come in!

So when I looked for the Bulldog set, it was GONE!! My heart sank. I thought I'd missed my chance.

Luckily for me (but not for the other guy) since my visit yesterday, some other person had come and gone, inspected the razor and moved on. But they put it back somewhere else. I spotted it again after a minute or two. Whew!

The guy who owns the place was not there and he's usually better at negotiating prices. The best the guy could do was $40 with no tax, so he save me a good $10-$15 bucks overall.

I have a feeling this baby is going to shine up like the sun.

Enjoy the pics. I'll be posting more tomorrow after a good cleaning round.

    Thanks All!!!

Glad you found it. After reading this thread over lunch, I had to run to the local antique mall here and while I found a lot of shaving stuff, nothing that really caught my eye.

Not to excite you prematurely, but you might have something even rarer than you think on your hands there. According to everything that I've read and been able to turn up in print, the Bulldog wasn't actually sold to the general public until 1914. Here's an ad from the October 1914 issue of Life introducing it:

That wouldn't seem to make any sense given your serial number would put your razor sometime in late 1909 based on current estimates. (Those earlier serial number boundaries are particularly fuzzy.) However, if Gillette's ad copy is to be believed (not always a safe bet, but in this case seems reasonable) they actually did make Bulldogs earlier than 1914 for the companies executives and just didn't sell them to the public, as described in this ad from the October 24, 1914 issue of Collier's (click through to enlarge):

Now, I can't say without any doubt at all that that's what you've got there, but I'd say it's a good lead on quite an interesting piece you have there!

Thanks Porter. Nobody here knows more about this stuff than you. I also found this post from another owner with a similar but newer serial (yes it makes me happy that mine is older )

Seems that there is either some variation on the Canadian Bulldog serial thing, or your speculation could be true as well. Either way, it's fine piece I'm happy to add to my collection!

    Cheers

Are the Bulldog heads significantly different from other Old Style heads? Could that explain the serial #? (feel free to mock the noob-ness of this question)

Oh! I didn't realize it was a Canadian Bulldog we were talking about here. Yeah, that changes everything. The Canadian serial numbers don't always (ever?) line up with the Boston plant ones, particularly early on in their production, from what I've seen. So just ignore what I said above. Still a very nice piece, though.
