So I replied to Franks Shaving:

Sorry, I had to really see if I was taking your response the wrong way, but here is how I interpret it:

“We normally set lofts in our brushes at 53mm or so, however acknowledging that you received one that is 10mm outside of our normal specifications, and the knot is set askew, the best solution is to spend more money with us on a custom brush”.

Am I getting that right?

I'll keep you posted if I hear anything back, plus, I want to make sure this thread gets a bump ever once in a while.

Probably unintentional, but that email comes off a bit confrontational. You might get better results with a more diplomatic tone?

Have you read the other emails we have exchanged? I would characterize it as "running out of patience" for sure. The guy acknowledges there is a problem with his brush workmanship, and instead of saying give me a chance to make it right, he says next time I can make you what you want? I kind of thought I was diplomatic in the first four or five emails we exchanged. I really don't expect a resolution, that was sort of a last chance for him to see where he is going wrong type of email.

99% of the badger hair used in brushes originates in China.

I don't know about the 99% figure you probably made up, but we all know and accept that most badger hair comes from china.

If you want to talk quality, I think we all accept that there is a better chance of having a defective chinese made item than a defective german made item. Possibly due, in part, to the factors listed above. I would also like to know which "well known english brands" are secretly made in china. I think that statement is at least partially false, and intentionally misleading.

that's how I see it, anyway.

I have to agree with Blondie. I thought all the previous correspondence were polite and diplomatic, giving the other party a fair chance to either explain or remedy the situation. I think the last email is justified. Reads like something I would send if I had gotten the same runaround.

Oh, and here's the latest:

I guess I get your idea now.The brush you received is 63mm loft from knot open of handle to top of tips instead of 53mm,which means not like I provided on the listing,am I correct?If is so,I can exchange a correct one to you and I will absorb all shipping cost for the old one from USA to China and the new one from China to USA.

I am not meaning to ask you spend some other money to order a custom brush.I apologize for that if I misleaded you.It is just a suggestion that if you like a shorter brush than my normal product.

My reply:That would be fine. Can you send me instructions on how to send the brush back to you? Do I need to fill out a customs form, what should I mark the value as to keep your costs low?

I figured Ian would do the right thing. Us Badgermen buy a lot of his brushes and it would be painful to lose that much business.

Some e-Bay seller supposedly in the U.K. is making that statement. I saw his ad and I wanted to laugh.

Well O.K. I did laugh. However, I limited my laugh to 15 seconds because his ad point irked me.

I know one person from a well known English brush maker who categorically stated that his knots have not nor will be made in China.
