    Default Gillette fat boy adjustable

I bought a pristine fat boy & have used it for the last 2 days.

Compared to my Merkur 34C its not that flash.

I get a much closer shave with the Merkur & my skin also feels much better.

I have ranged the settings from 3 to 8 on the fat boy.

The blade I am using is a Gillette 7 oclock blue.

I have a slim adjustable that I havent used yet & probably wont bother based on the fat boy experience.

    Jack,
Your experience is the EXACT opposite of mine. Started with the very same Merkur 34C and after a few weeks stopped using it. This past week I got my birthyear fatboy back from another member who fixed it (thank you Nick) and have gotten two great shaves out of it already.

The good news for you is that you'll have no problem getting your money back for the Fatboy (especially in Australia), but what you might do is wait a few weeks and revisit it.

Don't like 'em Jack? That's fine. Sell them to me. I'll be glad to take 'em off your hands!

+1. Love mine. But I bought mine when they first came out! In use for more than 40 years with never a problem.

I'm with you Jack - I wasn't that impressed with the shaves from my recently purchased Fat Boy. (Don't bother to ask guys - I'm keeping it!)
I use an EJ DE89, and find the shave much easier and better. I have a Slim that I'll try next, but unless that impresses me I'll go back to my '89.

I have a FatBoy handed down to me by my dad 46 years ago. Almost never use it & never really liked it. Gillette abandoned the design very quickly as consumers in that era preferred the slim after it was introduced. I seem to be the exception though as I rarely read anything but very high praise for it and it seems to have reached holy grail status among most traditional shavers. I keep mine since it was my first razor and given to me by my now 97 year old dad. It will eventually go to my son who has a greater appreciation for vintage razors than I do. That said, in the vintage arena he vastly prefers his New Long Comb and his New Improved to any of the TTO adjustables.

My Fat Boy does not get as much use as I would like The reason is NOT because I don't like it but because I have way too many razors and it takes a month or more for one to come back into the shave den for a single day's shave.

I am going to stick with it, I will finish the week with the Gillette blade then toss in a feather & see what transpires.

Regardless it won't be for sale, I love the nostalgia.

Possibly important observation. I've only used the Fatboy with a Feather. That might be a difference for you.

Also, don't take what I said about the Fatboy as an endorsement of its supremacy as a shave tool. I got two great shaves out of it so far, but for pure shaving joy, right now I prefer the much older Open Comb Leresche and an old Ball Handled Gillette Long Open Comb.

Use the Slim. I like the Slim more than the Fatboy.

For my money the Fatboy is a great shaver. Maybe you need a longer adjustment period (pardon the pun) as the angle is not exactly the same as what you use with the 34C? I love my Fatboy; it's still my favorite razor.

You might try a different blade.

The 34C is a nice razor though, when I joined B&B it was very popular. I have the 38C, just used it a few days ago and gave me a BBS.

Takes more than two shaves to figure out a new razor.

My daughter seems to like it! After having more Fatboys come through my house than I can count, my daughter decided to take one in EXC condition that I had sold to another member. Doh! Luckily that member was very understanding and gracious. I'll have to get a review from her
