I picked up some at BevMo today. Tasks like Jager (black liquorice). Not too bad.

Though I did just read that this "Absinthe Refined" actually has "Southern-wormwood" instead of the typical wormwood. Seems to react the same to cold water though, goes from clear-green to cloudy white-green. The flavor changes a bit as well.

Stop! Stop! I beg all of you! It's far too easy to acquire AAD (Absinthe Acquisition Disorder)!
Next thing you know, you'll have absinthe glasses and absinthe spoons and little cubes of sugar! And everything will have this weird, acid-like chrome appearance.
Actually, Jade is really lovely (especially since I didn't buy it).
But Pernod is another alternative. In fact, I believe Pernod manufactures a sort-of Absinthe now. But if my reading is correct, it contains little to no thujone.

You're correct. It's not considered a real absinthe. I bought it a few years ago when it just appeared in US and wasn't impressed. I have a french version of above (brought from France, not imported) - it might be real but I don't think even that is. It tastes better than US version though.

These two are real though and are excellent:

You caan buy that stuff around here under the name Absente.

St. George Spirits makes a great bottle for around $80. You can order it online from a link on their site. Made in the good ol' u.s. of a and one of the better ones out there. IMHO. I believe that this is the only true absinthe currently being distilled in the states. I had my brother-in-law wait in line for a couple of hours to buy a bottle for me when it was first released in late '07. Their second batch just came out in February. Given that my only previous absinthe experience was with the gross overly high proof czech variaties, I think this one is worth looking into for any absinthe lovers.

Thanks for the info. I went out to Park Ave liquors yesterday (in a pouring rain) to pick up a bottle of Laphroaig 15 and noticed St George Absinthe in the window. I picked up a bottle. The guy had told me not to even use sugar. I followed his advise. He was right. Pretty good taste. I don't know if it's better than Jade but it's pretty good.

I had a friend that purchased some in Spain and brought it back, that was my first encounter. I had tried Absente, Hills (as many mentioned dont bother, its trash) and I currently have a bottle of Pernod.

The legality of Absinthe in Canada has been similar to the US. In Ontario and BC you can buy certain brands of imported Absinthe (thuljone level heavily regulated), but you will pay an arm and a leg for just about any bottle. I believe Absente was about $50 a bottle, Hills was $92 and the Pernod was $80. Rejoice at Canadian liquor taxes.

Be warned that basically all Absinthe is going to be a higher proof than typical whiskeys/vodkas etc. I've been told this helps leech out the herb flavors. So drink in moderation.

Oh yea i drank this in Prague and it is great! It tastes nasty but if you mix a good amount of sugar in it helps. Any bottle works but just make sure the ingredients on the back actually list wormwood and not a rip off absinth. Cheers!

Thanks to everyone who has posted so far. You guys have backed up a lot of the research I have been doing on Absinthe. I think I may go out and grab a bottle of Lucid or Kubler tonight. I figure it is a good place to start, and then work my way to some of the Jades. Happy drinking and the next will be in everyone's honor!

I hope you will excuse my national preference... but, as I am coming form Switzerland, I cannot recommand anything else than absinthe coming from my country. I think one of the very best come from the Jura. I didn't try the new legal ones, but the old "forbidden"ones were exceptionnal...
I think you can by some online here: http://www.alandia.de/
You will find a few interesting links here: http://www.oxygenee.net/
and a nice article from the NYT about absinthe in the Val-de-Travers (it is a place in Jura) here: http://www.nytimes.com/2004/11/04/international/europe/04absinthe.html

If you like alcohol with anis, you can also try Turkish Arak, Greek Ouso, French Pastis, etc...

Cheers

I Googled Absinthe is leagle to posess in the United States, but cannot be sold in bars or liquor stores. I've never tried it and probably won't.

Hmmm. My experience differs. Bought some Kubler at a local Boston watering hole (which, just in case, shall remain nameless ).

I had some Kubler two weekends ago. Not unlike Ouzo, only moreso. Smoother. But certainly not for the timid. Fiendishly effective beverage.

A package store near my apartment only had lucid, but they said if I had an interest they could get several others. I am going to try the Lucid tonight, and if I like it will talk to them about the Kubler. Then will be talking to my wife about AAD.

I ordered some sebor absinthe, the actual purchase happens in the UK to get around the 'no selling in the us' law. The shipping is blazing fast. They also have the highest wormwood content allowed by law

The problem is that since its in the UK you need to deal with the exchange rate which pretty much doubles the price and with the weak US dollar its just gotten worse. I paid about $100/bottle

It tastes like jager for the most part. It did come with a spoon and a pipe. The pipe is really cool though, you put crushed ice in it and sip the absinthe through the ice to chill it as you drink.

If you are looking for some unique high I don't think you'll get it. I really didn't feel any different, but I switched to beer after a little while so maybe drinking it all night would provide a different drunk feeling.....but don't expect any green fairies

Sebor is NASTY!!! I would never recommend anyone buy or drink any of the Czech crap. LdF is a reliable vendor with good product. IMHO, a decent and reasonably priced absinthe is a Spanish product called Deva- very drinkable and a steal.

I tried Lucid last night, and I have to say it was different than I thought. However, I did enjoy it. I think I am going to try it a few more times, and if I still like it will look into getting some of the higher end stuff. Thanks again for all the recommendations.
