So the thing I find most impressive is that the teeth on the double-ring appear to be straight.
    Well-done!

It's entirely speculation (and perhaps a bit of wishful thinking), but this is sort of the direction that I'm leaning just from a logical standpoint. It would seem odd for Gillette to have started stamping the larger "PAT. APL'D FOR" style, then change to this smaller style, and then return to the larger style again at least by the time they began serial numbering. It's much simpler to think that this was an earlier form of the inscription, and that they changed to the larger, longer inscription at some point early on. Occam's Razor, and all that...
I see your point of view Porter, and it is viable, even if it was then why have we seen only one? wouldnt there be more out there and as the worlds number 1 shave site wouldnt somebody already have brought that out to attention? Many times in the past we have had Gillette errors even if it was not obvious or intentional ones, this could have been a technical error such as machine or factory management associated error, rendering this razor a possible rarity.

I’ll speculate as well that it makes most sense that your small print would be at the beginning rather than say in the middle of a model’s production. A story could be told the other way but it would need more (ifs and ands)

But looking at the photos posted here in the thread, it does look like the percentage of space used (height of text) changed through time. My no serial number says “PAT.APL’D FOR” , the band being about 5mm and the text is about 2mm or about 40%.

A seconded observation is that the period after “PAT” is used as much as a spacer as a period on all of them and they also all use a space before “FOR”.

Big time congrats McDaddy. That is one heck of an interesting score.

One thing I've noticed, looking through all the old photos of Double Rings I could turn up, is that the size of the smooth bands at either end of the handle seem to vary quite a bit in the earliest ones, particularly up at the top end. From the examples available, it seems to snap in to a much more consistent balance fairly early into the serial numbering cycle, as though they hit on some refinement in their knurling process as they went along

It does look like there might be a period after "PAT" in my inscription here. It's possible that it's also just a byproduct of the enhancement I did to that photo to get the letters to be visible. I don't have anything like a jeweler's loupe, but I can probably dig up a magnifying glass somewhere. It's darned impossible to make out in person without magnification. There's also a second dark spot after the "AP" in the photo that I think probably just a spot, but could possibly be a second period.

I thought it might be helpful to throw my DR into the mix for size comparisons. It reads "PAT. APL'D FOR" and also has serial number 10190. I have been experimenting on ways to get clearer closeup with my Kodak C613 digital. It only does auto-focus so it can be real tricky to get it to focus. But I think I have figured out the secret.

Amazing score, the "PAT" script is different or placed different on all of my double rings. My PAT. APL'D FOR with no ser# is also stamped upside down

Without either documentation or ability to exactly date the first of the razors coming out of the Gillette company, we may never know the miniscule differences and why/what order they took place. It's also possible that some of the razors are counterfeits.
