New Lijun Shaving Finest review

I received this brush a few days ago and I've had a chance to lather it up about 5 times and shave with it twice. So far I'm pretty impressed. This is by far more than I expected for the $13.98 that it cost to ship this to my doorstep from China.

My intent was for this to be a travel brush, so I opted for the cheapest version of their 2 band finest offering. I was also drawn to the matte black look of the handle. More on that in a minute.

On the 2 occasions that I've shaved with lather from this brush I've used TOBS Eton cream and Cade soap. This brush, although very dense and with a lot of backbone, seems to have performed better with the cream. However, given that I've only used it twice that may have been a fluke. Nevertheless, as you can see it whipped up a very rich and dense lather... much richer than I'm used to getting with TOBS in my EJ BBB med. I attribute that to the density of the knot, it's REALLY packed tight. When pinching the bottom of the knot it's solid as granite. I'm finding that I'm not a huge fan of the density, imo it's just too dense and I feel like I'm fighting the brush when applying lather to my face.

The tips of the brush are very soft. When dry there is some "scritch", but only if you dig the tips into your face. If it's dry and I do paint strokes I feel no prickliness. When wet and full of lather there is virtually no prickliness with any type of motion. I have never owned a silver tip or a super badger, but I can't see it getting much softer than this without being floppy.

The one drawback about this brush, or the handle to be exact, is that its made from molded plastic. I do like the matte black look and the font choice is nice for the logo. The weight of the handle is substantial and the finish provides a nice grip even when wet, but the only thing that bothers me are the mold lines that were not sanded down, as I've shown in the last pic.

Overall though, if you are looking for a phenomenal travel brush or are a fan of really dense brushes and are looking for a nice 2 band finest, at this price it's a no brainer. They do offer nicer handles for 3 or 4 bucks more as well.

That matte black handle is pretty darn nice looking. I'm curious as to the difference between Lijun and Franks as well.

Could you please supply me with the dimensions of your brush? Nothing too scientific, I was just wondering given your take on it's backbone if it had the 54mm loft they say so on the ebay ad? The knot is 22m, correct?
Thanks in advanced!

The loft is 55mm, the knot is 22mm. I have noticed, however, that the knot at the base is very hard. It seems almost as if there is some glue at the base, making it about 48-50 in loft in real terms.

I don't have much experience with brushes, but rest assured this has enough backbone for even the most aggressive face latherer.

Think of the mold seam as something to improve your grip on the brush. That makes it a feature, not a flaw.

I like the matte black, that's cool. As for the seam marks, for the cost of the whole thing, it wouldn't bother me. If I paid a premium for the brush, that's a whole different story.

this looks very interesting... I have a few questions:
1) can you feel the mold seam when you hold it or is it only a visual flaw?
2) did it have a strong smell ? if so how did you get rid of it?
3) did it loose any bristles?
Cheers,
Erez

I also just got one like this and find it is excellent for under 20 bucks shipped.
Alot of backbone but may hog the lather a little too much.

1) you can feel the seam, but it's not a bother. Just a visual flaw mostly.
2) yes, it did smell, but went away after a couple of lathers
3) out of 3 that I own, one is a shedder. The other 2 are rock solid.

Wish I could edit my original post, but I can't so I'll have to bump this.

I have recently had the privilege of using a tgn 2-band finest in fan shape. Phenomenal. I've also since I wrote this review used one of their silvertip grade A knots, also phenomenal. Consequently, I can't endorse these lijun brushes anymore, because the tgn finest knots are so affordable and of great quality.

I since have retired the lijuns, they will most likely be re-knotted at some time in the future when I have time. I now know what it's like to use a quality badger knot, and while these lijuns are ok they are not worth the hassle. Out of three I own, 2 of them have so much backbone that they don't release any lather whatsoever. They also seem to have been sloppily set, as adhesive can be seen at the bottom of the knot. The other one I own shed so badly I just couldn't use it.

I'm sure some folks have had some better luck with theirs, but for me it's not worth the risk. I now own 5 tgn knots and they are all really solid, no shredders and very nicely crafted. Not to mention they're a great value so for me if you're looking for affordable and good quality, go with TGN.
