    Default Long Live The Gemocracy!

I had shave number two with the vaunted Open Comb MicroMatic (OCMM) and twelve hours later I am still as BBS as when I left the bathroom.

Every time I use the razor, I wonder the same thing - How did GEM - ASR lose the blade wars with Gillette? From the outstanding audible feedback, to the ease of loading, to the supreme closeness of the shave; I can not imagine Gillette having a superior product in the 1930's.

I could go out right now, and still be the best shaved man at almost any event.

So without further ado, here is the photo of the SOTD -

That was an ultra rough shave, need to change the blade after 4. Lots of feedback and tugging, had to finish up with Single ring
Gonna try the new stainless ones next see how they go

Saint Charles Shave Refined Shave Soap, the vaunted and venerable chrome GEM Open Comb MicroMatic, the Rudy Vey B&B Butterscotch 2011 LE Brush and followed up with the Elixir of Elysium, Booster's MossWood.

I did not really need to shave this morning, and yet the OCMM eradicated whiskers I never even knew existed. Another close, smooth, BBS shave that is still that way more than 12 hours after completion.

Another great shave today with the OCMM. The TABAC bowl is filled with a puck of Mitchell's Wool Fat.

A very close, very smooth shave resulted but I certainly felt the Clubman burn - and after the shave, the knot popped out of the brush. I may have to pay Dr. Vey a visit.

    Exclamation

Last night, I felt the need to shave, and grabbed the Schick G8. I may have been too casual with preparation, though. I was using water from the dehumidifier, not my usual rain water, and it should have been the same, but the lather was slightly flat from the Van Der Hagen "Select" soap, and I nicked myself twice, close together, on my chin. In the couple of months now since I've had blades for the Micromatic, and got in the Chick blades from Amazon for the Schick, I have shaved 10-11 times with an SE of one sort or another, and last night was the first slip-up.

This L'Occitane Verbena soap is 20% shea butter and seems to do a great job of moisturizing the skin and softening the beard prior to shaving. I think it came from one of those gift baskets that some hotels leave for you in your room.

After not using it for a few months, I've rediscovered the love I had with the VDH Delux soap. It was the first non canned goo I used.

Just a question, why would you be using the water from your dehumidifier?

This morning's shave was Number 5 with the OCMM and I used the Sir Irisch Moos, with the RV B&B 2011 LE Brush for another outstanding shave. Though, I'm not as smooth now as I was yesterday at this time, I hope I can get one more good shave out of the blade before continuing with GEMini.

Today was the 6th and last shave with the OCMM. Still mostly smooth, with just a wee bit of scruff along the jawline, but well over 12 hours since the shave was completed. This was the setup for today:

Today, I used the Ever Ready 1912, Mitchell's Wool Fat, the RV B&B 2011LE and finished it off with Booster's MOSSWOOD.

The shave was incredibly smooth, and still nearly BBS after more than 12 hours since the completion of the shave.

I just got my newest lather-catcher inthe mail today, so I thought this would be a good place to showcase it and see what folks can tell me about it. It's apparently called a Stoll Chrome Steel razor. Don't know how old it is since on the razor it only says “Pat'd applied for”, but by looking at the case, I'd guess that it might be somewhere around 90 – 100 years old, but I might be way off. Hoping Alex or one of the other guys with the right resources might be able to shed some light on it. I started with the blade that came with it (also called a Stoll Chrome Steel blade). Blade has a little rust on the spine of it, but not right at the sharp end, so I decided I'd take it slow and see if it would work, but unfortunately that super-old blade was as rough as I feared it'd be, so I switched it out for an unused carbon GEM Blue Star blade and it was as good and smooth of a single-edge shave as I've ever had. Two with-the-grain passes and my face was so smooth that I saw no reason to go for a third. As the pics show, since I suspect that the razor is really old, I decided to go old-school with everything else and used the old tallow Williams shave stick(excellent thick lather), the old two-piece shave mug which I was told is over 100 years old and an old but in still good shape boar “Bristle-Tite” brand shave brush. I finished it off with some Shulton formula Old Spice in that “Old Spice flask” type bottle in the back of the picture that I found in an antique shop this weekend. I assumed that it was Avon when I first saw it, but upon further inspection, I discovered on the back that it was the old Shulton formula Old Spice after shave lotion, and that it was full. Much better scent than the modern Old Spice formula. All-in-all, it was a great shaving adventure with my new lather-catcher, really enjoyed it!

There are some entries in the Compendium about this razor. Made by the Kampfe Bros, sold by Sears Roebuck 1914-1926. There is a nice looking pic of yours in there. I don't remember how much I paid for the Compendium, but it's a wonderful resource. All PDF files.

The Friday before a long holiday weekend and I decided to Clubmanize! Clubman Shampoo in the shower, After Shave, Body Talc, and Hair Tonic. For the shave Mama Bear's Brute which is close to Clubman. The end result - a very nice, smooth, long lasting, close, comfortable shave.
