I enjoyed my inaugural SE shave tonight by taking my Micromatic Open Comb for a spin!

The best way I can describe the feeling of the MMOC is that there was a great deal of "blade feel" throughout the shave. I'm eager to learn if this is specific to the MMOC or a trait of SE razors in general, and I plan on trying out my new Clog Pruf tomorrow to find out.

Pictured below is my Berkeley brush after a 3rd pass face lather with one of bkfist's test soaps.
Thayer's Superhazel and AV Ice Sport rounded out a nice DFS for my first foray into all that is SE.

Thanks for the generous PIF/Contest. I've already learned so much from this sub-forum in 24 hours, it really seems to be off to a great start!

Default A Cheap and Crumby SOTD

I don't know if tradition demands that a SOTD be awesome, but today's was disappointing.

Preshave: A shower and a vigorous scrubbing with Kirk's Coco Castile Soap.
Shaving Grease: EMJ Mint, from the 99¢ clearance bin at my local Hy-Vee supermarket.
Razor: Gem Flying Wing Micromatic, aka Bullet Tip, aka Bullseye. $9-fiddy
Blade: Gem/Personna SS, from Walgreens. (6th)
    ASB: Gillette Sensitive Skin.

I knew from the first and only other time I tried Every Man Jack Signature Mint "Shaving Cream" that it's a totally non-lathering, greasy concoction with the consistency of warm margarine. I didn't like using it with a straight razor and was pretty sure I wouldn't like it with a safety razor, but out of sheer orneriness, common amongst SE-types, I gave it another try. It does a good job protecting the skin and has excellent glide, but it also seems to protect the whiskers from getting cut as well! True to its greasy nature it globs up in the razor head and is a beotch to rinse out. This stuff might be good if shaving in a desert and you had to conserve water, but otherwise a big nope!

Today was the 1900 Gem Jr. Damaskeene's day to play. Gem blade from the recent group buy. Felt like a menthol day, so I went with Bigelow cream & AV Ice Blue aftershave.

The original instructions say to hold the head flat against the face, but the PB shines about 10-15° steeper than that.

The book is of the gritty fantasy genre, like a more concise GRR Martin without all the talk about honor.

SOTD was my first with my most unusual razor: The Gold Manufacturing Co. Military Razor. This one is a three piece with a spring-loaded head. In theory, it's an OC. But you can see in the photos that the blade really sticks out to the very edge of the comb. This is one aggressive razor. Bit me multiple times with a new Gem blade. The correct angle seems to be more like a DE than any of the Gem razors. I'll give this one a few more attempts before I relegate it to display only status. But not tomorrow. I need to heal up, first.

That looks frightening, but in a good way. I have never seen that razor before, so thank you so much for sharing.
