Thread: Travel Nagura

    Default Travel Nagura

Ok - I thought this was going to be a little bit easier to accomplish. The Mejiro was a bear to cut... took forever. Botan was a lot easier - Tenjou was in the middle of the two, not easy but not quite as difficult as Mejiro. The Koma - that was tough because I was trying to be uber-careful to limit the waste. There was so much powder from the cutting it was crushing to throw it away. I contemplated trying to save it and figure out how to grind it down but I figured that was more trouble than it was worth.
I am going to consider cutting the Ozuku Tomo Nagura, and the Botan in half. I don't need either to be that large, and it will make the set a little tighter and lighter. The Botan will cut easily enough beacuse it's thin. That Ozuku though - I don't know if I can cut it with a hacksaw so easily.

Very cool looking set. Is this for refreshing your edges while on the road? Or just for storage?

    Do I count... Five Koma?

5 baby Koma - yep. These cut-down Nagura will be for both refreshing edges, and going the full distance if I need to.

I'm not done cutting yet - when I am done, they'll fit in there pretty well and I'll probably have some kind of toweling in there to keep things snug. They could travel as you see them now actually - if I put a piece of PT in there that would keep them all in place. A little chip here/there isn't going to cause much of an issue really though.

I decided to break down and buy a carbide blade for the hacksaw. Best 6 bucks I ever spent. Cut that Tomo Nagura in half in about 5 minutes. Cut the Botan slice in less than 1 minute.

Thanks - It's coming together. That soap dish isn't the final solution, it just happened to be sitting on my bench. I'd prefer something with a secure closure that's not too bulky. Have to figure out some way to transport the stone with the rubber block too. All in due time I suppose.

What about a small pelican case?

I'm probably going to get a Pelican 1040 for the Ozuko and the rubber block, I thought about a 1010 for the Nagura but I might be able to use something smaller. Bayomontate suggested an otter box, I have to look into them too.

A Pelican 1070 would probably work pretty well. I have a 1090, but it's a bit big for your needs.

The 1070 would be good if I was going to keep everything in one case, but it all needs to fit into a vintage Samsonite 'train-case'.
The 1040 fits the stone perfectly, so the nagura will have to have their own house. I tried the 1010 for the Nagura, it's too big. It I need something around the size of an old tin Sucrets box.

New development - this is the go-to travel set now. I picked up a Pelican 1040 for the Ozuku.
The glue on the insert that seperates the Nagura is a little ugly but I can live with it. It comes out, so I can change it if I have to.
The bottom and sides - and the seperator, are cut from a piece of 1/8" silicone. The sides and bottom are glued in place.
