Default Bovine Leather for Paddle Strop.

Guys, Ken Schwartz made me a paddle strop with bovine leather that's a dream. Problem, haven't been able to contact him for a while and I would like some strips of that leather without going to Tandy and breaking the bank. Anywhere else I can get bovine leather from?(Whipped Dog has horsehide)

The Hand American modular hone has a tanned bovine piece. You can get them over at Chef's Knives to Go. That what I'm using right now for my bench strop.

I think Larry is using English Bridle leather on his Poor and Rich man strops but that will be waxed and oiled which is part of the tanning process for Bridle leathers.

You can get a variety of plain veg tanned cow or steehide (Bovine) from Tandy in small 12" x 12" sizes (less than $15) or in wider, long strips for belt making. Many guys make nice "do it yourself" strops from this material. Various online suppliers like"E Leather" have this same leather. For paddles I would use the 12" square pieces or buy a 3" veg tanned strap and cut a number of paddle strips from it.

Is your paddle a light tan colored Veg tanned leather or specially tanned like Bridle or Latigo?

Thanks for the all the info Tony, I compared the color of my strop to the Tandy leathers and it would be 'Rust' but more than the color it's the draw that I really like(More draw the better) so if I can get that kind of draw in another color it doesn't matter. What I really liked is for such a low price I such a great little paddle now I want to experiment with some different lengths(1" by up to 15") I'll check out Tandy(I'm guessing you were talking about the Natural Cowhide Leather Strips).

    Thanks alot!

yes, the natural cowhide leather strips would work. They are fairly thick though so if making a paddle strop be sure to clamp them well after glueing to keep them flat side to side. They also have pre-cut craft tooling leather 12" square hanging in a bag on the wall. This is thinner but would make a fine paddle as the thinner leather may actually glue flatter as it has less body and tendancy to curl.
