That's what I was thinking, just like an amazon.com purchase if amazon isn't in your state, you don't pay taxes. Just find an out of state online tobacco store and shop away :)

If you call Cornell and Diehl they will put a sampler together for you. http://www.cornellanddiehl.com/pricing_and_ship.html They're good people, and often times it'll be Patty or Craig themselves that answer the phone.

Check these out. This one is the best sellers so it is a fail safe. http://www.pipesandcigars.com/standbyme.html

Here is the page of samplers http://www.pipesandcigars.com/samplers.html

Here is a good read on the types of pipe tobacco http://www.notsoboringlife.com/food-...-pipe-tobacco/

What are some of the things you like to smell? Maple, apples, cherries, smells of autumn, any spices, other fruit, etc? They make just about any scent these days. Hell, I even have a tin of Royal Cajun and I'd swear I was back in the old days of New Orleans sitting around good food. Another Cajun blend is Frog Morton on the Bayou and I feel like I should be sitting with my feet in the water sitting under a weeping willow tree. I have a Virginia flake that smells like roasted marshmallows on a campfire in the Fall. They make whiskey blends. I could go on and on.

I love acid cigars too! Just reviewing the link Derrick gave, check out how vivid you will find pipe aromatic tobacco.

And my personal experience, these descriptions are 90% spot on.

Nightcap is only sold by the tin anymore in the US, hopefully in the future bulk will be available again. SG is hit or miss with bulk sales and availability, they sell out so quickly that most retailers that still carry it in bulk don't list it below the tin weight.

pipesandcigars.com is indeed an excellent vendor, but they're in Albany and they have to charge you, as a NYS resident, the 75% sales tax.

Vendors that put together samplers of their own blends:

    vtpipes.com

    justforhim.com

    iwan ries

    4noggins.com

Try calling Smoking Pipes and see what they'll do for you. I wouldn't expect them to open any tins, but if you have a list of bulk blends you want to try they may put together a bunch of 1/2 ounce samples for you. I would also have a short list of accessories or cleaning supplies you need to make it worth their effort.
