I found this book on Honing from way back when. I dont know if anyone has ever put it on here for us to read but while looking for books that spoke about honing on lather this was an amazing book. It helped me see that barbers had been using lather on hone method for sometime to get great edge, and depending on the method could influence the edge. But without further speil from myself heres the link.

That's a cool idea. You know, those Olympic swimmers have suits that are based on shark skin. If there are any Olympic swimmers around who want to donate their suit to the cause, I think cutting one up and trying it out as a strop would be fun.

Books about the Swedish cutlery industry mentions both shark skin & the skin from rhinocerous as being used as a final polish on high-end knives & razors that required the finest possible finish.

    Hey Doc,
Go to Africa then select an old Rhino and follow it until the beast dies ...( When considering the lifespan of the animal please select a very old one. Unless the Rhino will start following you for the same purpose )

Oil works on coticules since it is non porous. This will give you a sharper feeling edge when you shave, but with some comfort level lessened.

Soap works too but not as much as oil will but with less "mess". I like to use Williams soap on stones when I use honing lather because it is the slickest soap out there (slick like a dish soap) and is also very cheap.

Another way to get the ultimate smoothness from your coticule you may want to try according to Gary is:

    Hone on dilucot as normal
instead of finishing with X strokes on water use a misty slurry to finish and dip the razor in water (the whole blade) every 10 strokes or so and then stop after then of those lap sets. It leaves a very skin friendly edge.

a nice walk in the woods helps me relax and relieves tension....

the fact i'm dragging a shovel and a body should be irrelevant...

Not any actual lather, but I use a drop of dish soap with my Spyderco ceramics.

It probably doesn't need to be said, but soap probably shouldn't be used on porous hones that require soaking.

I've actually done 100 x strokes with diamond on a coti and seen no real difference. I'll give it one more try just to see. I have however used .5 diamond on a Spyderco UF and it made a discernible difference.

I have used a thin, wet lather for a final 10 ultra-light laps on my Norton 8k for that last little bit of sharpness. I am also finding that it really works for a final 1-15 very fine strokes on my Dragon's Tongue as a finisher after the Norton.

Thanks for posting the free link, the book is very interesting and makes for some enjoyable reading, like the listing of razors he recommends, one is the "Lucifer" sold by Theo Kock in Chicago. price $1.75. Great name for a razor.
