Default Red Tip not International Harvester Red

I have obtained and used Krylon International Harvester Red to restore a worn Red Tip. It is the most popular candidate among BBers as being the original and authentic color of the Red Tip. However, I must challenge this factoid's veracity as shown below [sorry for the poor focus, but new at this].

    From Left to Right

    1] Valspar Royal Garnet
    2] Untouched vintage Red Tip
3] Another untouched vintage Red Tip
4] International Harvester Red-painted Red Tip.
In my opinion, International Harvester Red is pretty, but not close to the vintage Red Tip color. Royal Garnet is much closer.

    What say you?

    Burgundy Krylon is much closer.

The original shade does vary from piece to piece and from year to year.

No comparison there. But I have saw other post where the IH Red was just as close on the original as the Garnet is here. I guess in all things shaving YMMV!

If you refer to my previous post, the comparison was the Royal Garnet and a vintage untouched Red Tip. This is my first post showing a comparison with the IHR.

I just pulled my red tip that was retouched with IH red, and it looks nothing like yours. It looks more like your original one. Maybe you got a bad mix? Mine had one little tiny spot that was missing, and I did a touch up wih IH red and now you can't tell where I touched it up. I bought it a couple years ago at Walmart. When did you get yours?

About a week ago. I ordered it online from a website called ENCO.

The color "splotch" that I added to the OP photo is IH Red from a graphic color standards chart.

    Doesn't match any of them!

From my days in the equipment industry, we sold spray touch-up paint that was labeled "International Harvester Red" and depending on the vendor, ranged in color from garnet to bright red. It never matched the equipment . . . but was "close enough" for equipment guys!

Razor Geeks demand a little more precision . . . while some vendor's IH Red may be a great match, the "standard" as well as the paint sample used on the far right-hand razor sure isn't the original. I vote for the Valspar Garnet on the left . . . looks darned close to me!

I have actually come 'round to seeing it your way. Krylon sells two types of IH Red and they are clearly different. Nice touch with the color splotch. Too bad it does not match any of the razors. I'm a bit surprised that some razor geek doesn't actually know the answer and can even provide a reference.

PS I think that I can sue you for copyright infringement. Just kidding.

    Ah!
Watch this video starting at about 50 sec.

The IH red color was changed from the old one (201) to a brighter one (2150) in 1961.
The old color was kept on for servicing older equipment.

edit: oh, and that's apparently not the only time the color was changed.

I'll have to go look at my can of Krylon IH Red. It was a very good match to three vintage Red Tips, and nothing like the neon red pictured.

Maybe we can get a kerfluffle going over this like we have had for years with vintage Old Spice: I'm going on record as saying that age has changed the coloring on the vintage Red Tips we have today, and modern IH Red is really closer to what the guys in the 50's were holding in their hands before UV rays, magnetism and the subtle chemical miasma present in every bathroom altered the shade of the paint.
